Converting kei cars to look like other vehicles is a tried and true tradition in Japan. Often times the transformations are tongue in cheek, morphing them into something they’re clearly not, like a baroque vintage design or a far more expensive SUV. These can be hit or, more often than not, miss, but a new kit from Japan manages to graft on a nose from an entirely different car while not looking entirely out of place.
The Spiegel Fusion kit from Japan grafts a B110 Nissan Sunny grille onto a DA16T Suzuki Carry. The kei specialty shop gained some notoriety when they began offering a kit to convert a Daihatsu Hijet into a J300 Land Cruiser. As for the Sunny kit, not only does it include the lattice grille pattern and round headlights, but the center press line of the hood is replicated just above the grille in shortened form.
The kit even comes with a separate bumper, just like the original Sunny. Spiegel says that the width is the same as the original Sunny’s, so the proportions don’t look off. The headlight bezels are separate pieces as well, to make them easier to paint.
The craftsmanship looks to be superb, with tight fits all around. The kit looks like it just belongs, and instantly gives the Suzuki Carry a nostalgic vibe. This is especially true when painted like a National service truck.
Fusion also offers an optional chin spoiler, in case you want to make it look even sportier. B110 Sunnys are a popular touring car platform so an air dam is wholly appropriate, especially with the exposed fasteners for that race car look. The spoiler has a center press line that lines up with that of the panel above the grille.
The kit is made of FRP and runs ¥385,000 (approximately $2,650 USD). The headlights and turn signals are sold separately and cost an additional ¥38,500 (approximately $265 USD). The optional chin spoiler costs ¥55,000 ($379 USD). It’s one of the rare retro kits that looks unironically cool rather than kitschy. Expect to see it all over the Tokyo Auto Salon next year.
THAT is some peak Showa!!! I love that truck!
