Toyota’s Castrol livery is getting resurrected once again, this time in Australia. Earlier this year the livery was worn on the NASCAR Mustang of Brad Keselowski during Darlington Raceway’s Throwback Weekend. The Aussie one does it better by putting the colors on an actual S650 Mustang body, not a generic NASCAR shell, and it looks darn slick.
This Mustang races in Australia’s long-running V8 Supercars Championship. Built by Tickford Racing, the No.55 ‘Stang is driven by Thomas Randle and Tyler Everingham, and will compete at historic down under racetracks Sandown and Bathurst.
The livery looks spectacular, especially with the S650’s long, curved hood that’s reminiscent of the A80 Supra’s. The team gave a shout out to the “the legendary Castrol colours made famous by the Castrol TOM’s Supra in Japan’s Super GT Series”, the WRC rally cars on which the livery originated, and Keselowski’s NASCAR Mustang.
“This year marks 125 years of Castrol globally, so we thought it fitting to run one of the most famous Castrol liveries of all time,” said Randle. “Like many, I have fond memories of playing Gran Turismo on PlayStation, and the Castrol TOM’s livery is one of the first that comes to mind.”
However, while the livery seemed to have given Keselowski the edge to take first place at Darlington, Randle and Everingham placed eighth at the Sandown 500. Hopefully their fortunes will change at Bathurst on the weekend of October 9-13 so race teams around the world will Castrol all the things.
My first thought when I saw the first photo “that looks more like a Supra than the new Supra”
I don’t even like newer Mustangs, but as a Toyotaesque racecar, it looks ok 🙂
