MINICARS: The ultimate Hakosuka Skyline scale model will take you two years to complete

Nissan Skyline KPGC10 GT-R Hakosuka subscription model 01

Only in Japan could something so obsessed with detail, patience and completism exist. This KPGC10 Nissan Skyline GT-R scale model is, quite simply, astounding, measuring over 21 inches in length at 1:8 scale and comprised of over 400 individual pieces that you assemble yourself — but that’s not even the astounding part. Those individual pieces are mailed to you separately, week by week, over a span of two years

The subscription lasts 100 weeks to be exact, with four to five pieces arriving each time with a small book about the GT-R itself. Just imagine the anticipation that you’ll feel whenever a new volume appears. Will it be a windshield wiper? A spare tire? The passenger-side door!?

The pieces are designed to be assembled without glue, because god forbid you screw up one of the most expensive models you’ll probably ever build. Volumes cost ¥1799 ($15) each, which means by the time the project is done you will have spent $1500 on a scale car.

I have heard of these. You might find a completed one at a high end Japanese model/hobby shop a few years from now.

  2. Brian says:

Wow, that thing is incredible…lights and all!

Definitely not only in Japan. Google “DeAgostini Millennium Falcon” or check out Tested Builds: Millennium Falcon Studio Scale Replica, Part 1
Apparently these kinds of kits are popular in the UK, though apparently some will discontinue kit subscriptions before they finish. Seems like that might be less likely to happen in Japan.

lol @ the actor’s facial expression while ‘playing’ with the model. Honestly that’s how I’d look with giggles thrown in here and there, so job well done.

  5. Alejandro says:

Classy. It’s seem to exist something like a rule with these kits… They play with us and broke our heart. I sincerely Hope Japanese ethical principles come to the table in this, astonishing kit.

  6. Shea Laking says:

WOW! Would totally want this, if only I could justify spending the $.

There have been quite a few of these types of models over the years. There was a Toyota 2000GT a few years ago (DeAGOSTINI 1/10 scale), and there is currently a Nissan Fairlady Z (Vol 70 was just release – a member of the hellototomica SNS has been building the Fairlady and updating with progress on a weekly basis).

Build a model by subscription? That’s so Japanese! A huge high-end model for $1500 is expensive but not unheard of, especially given that the level of detail seems astounding! I wonder if anyone is mothballing these.

  9. Wayne Thomas says:

1799¥???? People need to shop around because bookstores here have it for a lot less than that. Box #1 is the front grill and headlight assembly.

  10. james says:

Where can I find that and if they make one for the Fairlady Z-432 I’d be one happy man. I don’t care if it’ll take 2 years, the thought of meticulously recreating a JNC totally trounces the notion of just getting it done in one day.
