PlayStation 5 is the console to get if you want total Japanese car immersion

It might not be possible to upend your life and collect a stable of dream cars and race them in Japan and beyond, but a PlayStation 5 is going to be your next best bet. The long awaited reboot of the hashiriya saga Tokyo Xtreme Racer was released on PC earlier this year to the surprise of many fans. Now, developer Genki has announced that the game is coming to PS5 as well.

The news came as a button on the end of a video announcing the inclusion of the Lexus LFA into TXR. Genki has been releasing short videos showing the game’s expansive roster, which includes more eras than previous TXR iterations. Golden era 90s cars like the EK9 Civic Type R and S13 Silvia are there, but the lineup also includes classics like the Hakosuka GT-R, kei cars such as the Honda Beat, but also modern greats like the GR Yaris and NC1 NSX. There’s even a UCF31 Toyota Celsior/Lexus LS430.

The PlayStation has been the console of choice for Japanese car otaku because the OG of JDM racing games, Gran Turismo was and always has been a PS exclusive. However, earlier this year Forza Horizon was ported to PlayStation for the first time, no longer confined to the Xbox. Even better the highly anticipated Forza Horizon 6, which takes place in Japan, will be available on PS5 as well. Tokyo Xtreme Racer on PS5  completes the trifecta.

So if you can only afford one console, PlayStation 5 is the way to go. Now, how about that Auto Modellista reboot?

If it were possible to buy complete games in physical format that would ensure I could play the game so long as the console worked, I’d be buying one today. As it stands, with no guarantee that I’ll be able to play the games and even console I bought in 5-10 years, I’m probably going to miss out.
Is the PC version complete or does it require Internet connection?

The PC version is still in Beta the last time I played it 2 weeks ago. Its actually very fun and reminiscent of the PS2 version. I admit I skip through all the cut-scenes, though. One downside is I’d say is progression is slow because you’re starting the game with an AE86 and slowly working your way up through mods to beat and gain faster cars. I understand this is the point of the game, but I’d like to start with more interesting options. The base game loop is very fun, though.

Thanks for the info. I played thru Import Tuner Challenge a few times, I loved it. And before that I played TXR Zero mostly, for some reason I had a hard time with TXR 3.

It’s too bad you don’t get a wider variety of cars to begin with. Maybe they will be corrected with the full release.
