There’s a rumor that Nissan is preparing to launch a 55th anniversary edition of the Nissan Z later this year. Prototypes of the car have reportedly been brought stateside already, and dealer allocations will depend on how many Zs that store has sold already.
According to Carscoops, this special edition Z will be a limited production model. Dealers that have already sold 10 Zs will receive three of these special edition cars. There are no details on whether it’ll have and performance gains (unlikely) or cosmetic upgrades (likely), but the article speculates that there could be styling that borrows from the Fairlady Z Customized Edition that’s available in Japan.
That car, inspired by the Fairlady Z432-R, features a split front grille that addresses the standard Z’s most controversial styling feature, its gaping rectangular air intake. It also features other tribute cues like a rear spoiler, a retro-style Z B-pillar emblem, and 19-inch wheels reminiscent of RS-Watanabes.
Hopefully, the allocations will de-incentivize dealers from marking up the Zs like they have been. While we would love to see the Customized Edition nose in the US, that part is pure conjecture at this point. The car is expected to be released this fall, timed to coincide with the the Nissan Fairlady Z and Datsun 240Z’s introduction in 1969 just four days apart from one another on opposite sides of the globe.
Unfortunately sounds like there will not be too many. About the only time I have seen the new is at a ZCON! Once again seems like the only vehicle in Nissans line up that could raise one’s pulse level up has been a flop by nissan marketing
Is there any dealer that has sold 10 Zs??? I have NEVER seen a privately owned Z in the wild, only a company test mule that some Nissan employees ran at one of my SCCA Region autocrosses last summer.
Even in Califonia, I’ve only seen 2 or 3 in the wild. According to Nissan, there are production issues. They’re even hard to come by in Japan. If you go on the Nissan website there it says there’s a “temporary order suspension notice”.
Thanks for the info Ben.
“Stateside” ??
I’ve seen the new Z in the wild, but only when I went to the z club meeting. dealer markups are ruining it
I have yet to see one of these on the road or in person.
