Mugen celebrates 50th anniversary with Casio watch

In 1973 Mugen was founded to build race and aftermarket parts for Honda motorcycles and cars. Its racing engines, composites, and tuning parts have powered everything from Formula 1 cars to hooptie Civics over the decades. This year marks its 50th anniversary, and to toast the occasion the company is teaming up with Casio for a commemorative watch.

Right away the trademark livery colors of white, red, gold and black give away the Mugen association. But if that’s not clear enough, the Mugen kanji logo is laid out at the 3 o’clock position. Additionally, the tips of the hands are finished in the same red and and the in-dial is emphasized with white, gold and red.

The colors and logos extend to the band, including Mugen’s famous Eye Commander symbol. The band is made of the same Alcantara that’s used to upholster Mugen racing seats. The tricolor can also be found on the band’s stitching and loop.

Casio says that the watch’s case is made of carbon fiber reinforced resin for lightness. The lugs, made of the same material, are designed after suspension arms from a race car.

The Mugen logo is also engraved into the back and the face is protected by scratch-resistant sapphire glass. The face lights up with dual LEDs, and a Bluetooth connection can sync the watch with world time and let you set the alarm via a smartphone connection.

Finally, the watch comes in a carbon fiber pattern box. If you’re a die-hard Honda head, the watch will set you back ¥44,000, or $315 USD at what is a very favorable conversion rate. It follows in the footsteps of other Casio automotive collabs, including an Initial D/MF Ghost timepiece and a pair of Honda ones paying tribute to the RA272 F1 car and RC162 GP motorcycle. The Mugen 50th anniversary Casio goes on sale August 10 in Japan.
