‘Tokyo Xtreme Racer’ returns after 18-year hiatus on January 23

The long wait is almost over. The developers of Tokyo Xtreme Racer have announced that the first TXR game in 18 years will be released on January 23 on Steam. The team has also been sharing glimpses of the game itself, with a promising roster of cars and the names of some familiar Wangan rivals fans will recognize.

We’ve been completely stoked about TXR’s return since developer Genki made the announcement last August. The January 23 release comes with some stipulations, though. It’s PC only (for now), and Early Access means there will still be lines of code to smooth out before the official release. As Genki stated in a letter to fans, they will be gathering feedback from Early Access players to help improve the game before its full release in the second half of 2025.

Already it looks like the new TXR will be a worth addition to the franchise. The graphic style and car modification style faithfully captures the look and feel that fans of the original fell in love with. Genki says there will be 50 playable cars, 200 rivals and over 180 km (112 miles) of the Shuto Expressway to explore. We were thrilled to see the return of foes like the Rolling Guy crew, but are also keen to play newer cars like the Mazda 3.

So far the list of cars spotted in Genki’s videos and screenshots includes old favorites and modern classics as well. Here’s a list of what we’ve seen:

  • Toyota AE86 Trueno/Levin
  • Toyota 86 ZN6
  • Toyota GR86
  • Toyota Supra A80
  • Subaru BRZ
  • Subaru Impreza WRX STi GDB
  • Subaru WRX STI VA
  • Suzuki Swift Sport
  • Mazda 3 BK
  • Mazda 3 BP
  • Mazda RX-7 FD
  • Mazda RX-8
  • Nissan Fairlady Z Z34
  • Nissan Skyline GT-R R34

In addition, there are some interesting traffic cars. In past installments traffic cars haven’t been playable, but the fact that programmers rendered the Suzuki Cappuccino, Daihatsu Copen, Nissan 180SX, and Mazda Roadster NA seem significant. Perhaps they will be available to the player in some way. Let us know if we’ve missed anything! It looks like a rollicking good time and we can’t wait.

Hope it comes to consoles…although at this point that won’t help me either since my most modern systems are the PS4 and Switch.

Maybe I should finally break down and get a gaming PC. I’d like to try iRacing one of these days. And I think it’s Assetto Corsa that has some touge racing mods?

    • Langheck says:

I can recommend Assetto Corsa. Despite being first published in 2014, the game is open source, so the modding community has done wonders with adding content that easy to access for players of the game.

If you’re looking for Historical Touge roads, there’s mods and a community for that. If you’re looking to cruise a complete rendering of the Shutoko Expressway, there’s a mod and community for that.

Any Historical circuit, whether it be 1968 Fuji or 1992 Suzuka, it’s all accessible and rendered by enthusiasts that want to bring history back to life.

Last year I collaborated with a modeler to release a racing spec KPGC10 Hako to the AC community for free. In the process, researching and rendering forty historically accurate liveries worn by GT-Rs between ’70-’72.

TLDR Assetto is worth looking into. Not the flashiest in terms of graphics, but tons of content.

Thanks for the info – sounds like instead of sinking money into another console, I need to go gaming PC route. The fan modding community sounds pretty awesome.

May be awhile before I can justify it, but maybe I’ll come across a great deal on a budget one. I’m not a framerate counter, and I don’t need the ability to run 4k resolution or anything.
