Tokyo Auto Salon sonohoka (odds and ends)

The Tokyo Auto Salon can be sensory overload. There’s just so much to see, you probably can’t finish it all in one day. In Japan the term sonohoka means “the rest” or “the others”, sort of like “etc.” in English. We featured several cars already, but here are sonohoka that caught JNC‘s eye, starting with a B110 Sunny at the Endless Brakes booth.

A restomod RT40 Toyota Corona built by students at the Toyota Tokyo Automobile College.

The Obayashi Factory Hakosuka with a JMC L-series bored out to 3.2 liters.

Built by Old Star, a Hakosuka Skyline with a full dry carbon body.

A Nissan Bluebird U on Work Equip 03s displayed by SPPF, a paint protection film.

A 40-series Land Cruiser by Gunma Toyota Group with some GR Heritage Parts.

Exhaust maker Fujitsubo displayed a Mazda Savanna RX-3 and an AE86 Corolla Levin. Note the stands made out of exhaust tubing.

Veilside, known for 90s outlandish body kits, came with a relatively clean ’78 Fairlady Z decked out in the company’s carbon fiber body parts. The wheels are RS-Watanabe Gotti MGs.

A Suzuki Jimny lowrider built by students at the Nihon Automobile Technical College.

A Mazda Carol tuned by RE-Amemiya, reminiscent of Ame-san’s famous Super Chantez.

One of our faves from this group, a super clean AE86 Corolla Levin by Riko Style built with an interior and engine more befitting of a race car, but appearing  more or less stock on the outside. It’s the perfect complement to…

… A beautiful drift-era Nissan 180SX by Car Modify Wonder. Retro drift machines, like the 90s throwback B-Wave 180SX, are back!

IYKYK.

A Suzuki Cappuccino dressed up to resemble Lightning McQueen of Pixar’s Cars fame.

A body kit by Wise Square that transforms a Honda S660 into a mini-NSX.

Craft Sports, one of Japan’s largest Skyline GT-R dealers, had a host of Godzillae for sale, including a heavily modified Hakosuka, one of 197 Kenmeri Skyline GT-Rs, a Tommykaira R32, a rare four-door R33 GT-R Autech Ver. 40th Anniversary Edition in Midnight Purple, and a Clubman Spec R34 V-spec II.

Liberty Walk’s latest creation, an R32 dressed up to look like an 80s kaido racer.

A 100-series Land Cruiser with the front end of an FJ62 by overlanding shop Raptor.

KLC came with multiple Jimnys, including a (very) short bed pickup and a rally racer with Castrol livery.

Crewch’s RZ34 Fairlady Z with a body kit inspired by the G-nose and finished in a color paying homage to the Grand Prix Maroon of the 1972 240ZG.

Overall the number of classics was less than years prior, but there were still gems to be found. There were hundreds of cars, but these were the ones that best served as JNC eye candy. If there are specific questions about any of the cars drop a comment below and we’ll try to get an answer for you. Until next year.

Oh mannnn, what a great way to end an exhausting week at work. I hope you don’t mind me saving a number of these pics onto my screensaver! Very envious that your time got to attend Auto Salon.
