The ND Mazda Miata is as pure a car as can exist today, but if there’s one thing it lacks, it’s fun colors. However, a few lucky enthusiasts in Japan will soon get to own one in A6Y Sunflower Yellow, known in the US as Competition Yellow from the 2009-10 NC Miata. It’s officially called the Mazda Roadster FSW Ver.2, and only six will be built.
Technically, this isn’t an official Mazda Motor Corporation creation, but the brain child of four Japanese Mazda dealers: Kanto Mazda, Shizuoka Mazda, Tokai Mazda, and Koshin Mazda. However, all the paint will be done at Mazda Engineering & Technology, the Mazda subsidiary that builds Mazda’s concept cars. Mazda E&T is located in in Hiroshima and wholly owned by Mazda Motor Corporation, so the Roadster FSW Ver.2 is about as official as one can get.
The paint job will cost ¥1,452,000 (approximately $9400 USD) so it’s not cheap. It includes the body, of course, but also the color-matched parts on any standard Mazda Roadster, which consists of the interior upper door trim, air conditioning vents, and key fob. Each car will come with a certificate from Mazda E&T to authenticate its provenance.
Additionally, anyone who buys a Roadster FSW Ver.2 will be able to bring a guest to the ultimate Mazda vacation. The two-day, one-night tour of Hiroshima will include a visit to the Mazda headquarters, Mazda Museum, and Mazda E&T factory.
With only six units to be produced demand is expected to be high, so the right to purchase one will be decided by lottery. Incidentally, the car’s name comes from Fuji Speedway, where the 2026 Mazda Fan Festa will take place on October 3-4. Prospective buyers can apply for the lottery then, with winners announced at the main stage before the end of the event.
WANT. These kinds of small programs would be a great idea for other Mazda dealers/importers to try out. They’re not technically difficult, and the upside is way higher than the cost to do it.
It looks good in BRG, Robin’s egg blue, permission and other colors, as welll. Why Mazda refuses to make the MX5 in traditional sportscar colors is frustrating. Grey, white, silver are boting.
This car is getting old, but the yellow definitely looks great. $9k is not cheap, but a trip to Mazda might be worth it, provided it includes plane tickets!
You’d be surprised to learn from me that I don’t consider even the NA an old car. That thing was so much modern even for its day that people still can’t comprehend how good that thing is. But that’s expected from occidentals who grew on Cobras and E-types. I never like any Cobra beyond the 260 engine, neither any E-type beyond a six inline. I had to remove those cars from my mind as well.
Its not me saying that the japanese are perfect. Just that they simply know a couple of things better than any occidental around. The ND isn’t old, only the minds of people get old. Mine will never get old. Simply impossible.
Should be a standard color option. Might get me to get rid of my NA. Maybe not…
Fiat can repay its debt to society by giving Mazda the Fiat 124’s Passione Red.

I got an rf in grey and my brother told me it was my mid life crisis car. I reminded him that my kids are grown and moved out and he has a long way to go. now I call it a mid life celebration. I ask him how his SUV drives. All. The. Time
I got similar comments when I got my 2008 NC Miata at age 50+. Nah, it’s not a mid-life crisis car. It’s delayed gratification, a just reward after successfully raising responsible, college-bound kids.
I love it. I have owned 2 Miata’s and still have my 2008 Miata mica red with 109,000 miles on it. I am a die hard Miata roadster owner. Wish I could afford a retractable hardtop. Until then…❤️
Mazda offers the most compelling mix of attractive styling, build quality, reliability, equipment, and driving fun of any brand out there, bar none, but good grief are they lacking in paint color creativity.
And yes, the ND looks fantastic in yellow. If only one car in their lineup should be offered in something aside from two non-colors and a somewhat interesting burgundy, it should be the pluckiest little sports car of all time.
And for goodness sake, Mazda, please offer a few nice color options for leather too – an oxblood and a navy would be gravy.
