The 1993 movie Loaded Weapon 1 was a National Lampoon parody of 80s action films like Lethal Weapon. It was completely nonsensical, but actually had some big name stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Emilio Estevez, and Tim Curry. To us, however, the real star was the Subaru SVX that appears briefly as the bad guy’s getaway car.
In this clip it takes a while to get to the SVX scene, but it give you a good idea of Loaded Weapon‘s comedic tone. As bad guy Tim Curry makes his getaway, he jumps into a silver SVX and takes off, swinging the tail out as he goes. The scene is unfortunately really short, but it might just be the most action an SVX has ever seen on the silver screen.
What we’d like to know is how producers chose the SVX for this scene. In 1993 the funky coupe would have been new and exotic. The other cars in the same scene are all big chrome-trimmed Detroit land barges, and the SVX might as well be a UFO in comparison. The 230 horsepower from its boxer six is torquey and, while not scorching, is peppy enough. Top sports cars of the era had “only” 300, so the Subie would still make a solid getaway vehicle. Ultimately, we just like this scene because we can’t recall ever seeing an SVX used in an action sequence.
