QotW: What are you asking JNC Santa Claus for this year?

There’s a legend in Japan that a jovial, rotund man in a white suit with a big red dot on it lives at the northernmost tip of Hokkaido. He keeps a list of lonesome car boys and girls and for those deemed good, on the night of December 24th he drifts down all the mountain passes of Japan in a white and red Roadster to sneak into their garages and leave them any wish their hearts desire. For those on the naughty list, however, they’ll wake up to find all their 10mm sockets replaced with 11mm ones. JNC readers mostly fall on the good side though, so we can put in a good word for you.

What are you asking JNC Santa Claus for this year?

The most entertaining comment by next week will receive a prize. Scroll down to see the winner of last week’s QotW, “What mods have you regretted making on your JNC?“.

When it comes to mods, a good rule of thumb is that you should never do anything that’s irreversible. We can feel the pain of Jonathon P. when he decided he shouldn’t have drilled the dash. At least Fred Langille is taking stepts to remedy the alligator print insert he put in his dash. Similarly Taylor C, wishes he hadn’t removed an AC bracket in his Z32, and StreetSpirit laments using off-the-shelf fender flares on his Civic.

If your regrettable mods are reversible, count yourself lucky. That includes Kyuusha Corner‘s lightweight flywheel and coilovers on a B13 Sentra SE-R, speedie‘s- JC Whitney antenna on ‘a 76 Celica, and Mike‘s retro bucket seats for a different ’76 Celica. Land Ark once put too-small wheels on a Maxima, and if that’s your biggest regret that’s amazing.

The winner this week Joe Musashi, who made us chuckle by questioning the premise of modding altogether:

what mods? I have enough of a handful keeping the thing alive. Last thing I want to have is more unreliability because I had to add more HP because the box said so.

Omedetou, your comment has earned you a set of decals from the JNC Shop!

I already got my JNC Christmas present! 2 weeks ago I picked up my dream car of over 10 years, a 1996 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV in Palma Red, which I bought back in August and had just finally arrived from Japan. I made a pretty big leap of faith buying it, just going off of photos and a VIN check, but it was well worth it. The car is in amazing condition cosmetically and it drives just as well as it looks. Unfortunately due to living in the north east, the amount of time I could drive was limited due to snow, but it gives me a good chance to do all the prevantative maintenance and really prepare it for spring. I can’t wait to finally enjoy something that I’ve dreampt of for so long!

    3 Kumho tires.
Its not much. They are about $100.00 apiece and, inexpensive to mount, balance etc. They are all I need to get SYNARA back on the road. Firestone will do the work of fixing the front end and rear brakes. I can get the A/C redone and, a radio reinstalled both for silly money. Now, the brand new battery is dead … add that to the Kumhos cost.
What’s the problem if all of this appears to be relatively inexpensive?
We needed to have aa brand new deck/ramp installed as ours, after 35 years was falling apart. We needed help with that so, after increasing a small loan and, getting ANOTHER credit card, it was done. Then, the ceiling to the master bathroom FELL IN …necessitating a new roof as well. We needed help with that and, got it.
So, $300 for 3 tires isn’t much but, the extra jing for these repairs takes a bite out of our expense money for them. We usually get our taxes back but, am not sure how much. So, its both the cost and, I hope the availability of the Kumhos.
So, JNC Santa, just make sure we aren’t blindsided this year by things like decks and roofs so we can get SYNARA back on the road where he belongs. The cash for the tires isn’t the problem … no more costly repairs please … oh yes, one more thing. Besides the roof et al, we are paying for 5 years maintenance on our generator as well … $800.00@$100 per month. Just let us not have any surprises this year so, we CAN repair SYNARA, OK. Not too much to ask is it, we hope!

A clean, relatively low miles, and most importantly, adult owned, 1.8 Litre NA Miata.
Manual trans is mandatory, I can be less picky about color.

    Too much?

I know I have reached the number of vehicles in the household, but I’d love to have a JDM station wagon that’s low miles, good with gas, manual transmission, family-sized, and moonroof. I actually don’t have a preference on which wheels powering the wagon, as a Toyota Crown Estate would be nice, or an Accord SiR wagon would look great, or a Stagea would add to the Nissan stable. I really miss the looks, versatility, and rareness of a wagon,

Can JNC make a decently affordable wagon show up where I can see firsthand I stare of buying sight unseen? That’s be cherry on top!

For the special order SuperPro st165 bushings I ordered a month ago to actually be shipped and not wind up being a “no longer available” situation.

Or for the old bushings to magically rejuvenate and the clunks to go away on their own.

Hopefully not being too greedy here, I also ask Toyota Santa to add the st165 (and st185 for my All-Trac/GT-Four brethren) to the GR Heritage Parts program.

Christmas came a few days early for me this year. Last week my family presented me with a HotWheel Porsche 911 Dakar. They asked me if I could think of what that meant. I said you got me a Porsche? They said NO but we purchased you some track time in a GT4 RS at Senoma Race Way with your son. The thought of that was shocking and overwhelming. Especially since I have always wanted to do some track time with my son in my 240Z.

So Saturday we set out on our way to the the Bay Area. Sunday Morning we arrived at the track early. It had been lightly raining and the track was soaked. We where hoping by our session the track would dry. But a completely dry track was not to be. Our session came and went. The company was not allowing the GT4 RS to be on the track. We were told we could drive anything else or wait for the afternoon session to see if the track would dry as they were only going to let the fat heavy pigs on the track when it is wet. As they brought the car onto the track for us it started raining.

So we choose to drive a Ferrari 488. What a visually beautiful car. It is also comfortable to be in. However, as I have read you cannot slowly drive a super cat smoothly. The throttle and brakes are like a light switch, on or off. But once on the newly surfaced track and some speed is added the car is very smooth. As I began to get use to the track and car I realize how board I was as the car is in rain mode it is not that fast and the instructor ques where always late. I got out of a modern Ferrari and stated that was BORING it was so uninvolved. I would have had so much more fun in my 1972 Datsun 240Z.

My son had a big smile on his face when he got out of the car but described the same experience. We both realized that had the cars not been in rain mode the cars would have been more interesting. As we talked and did some calculations we realized that my Zs power to weight ratio is within 0.5 hp/pound of the Ferrari 488 and the Ferrari is so much newer and refined it really removes much of the driving experience. What really became apparent is what an Amazing car the 240Z really is.

    Merry Christmas!

If only I had thought to ask Santa instead of spending my own money on all new suspension for my Crown… Oh well, if you’re reading this Santa, a 2-door Skyline Japan or a Z10 Soarer would be swell

Usually we ask Santa to bring stuff, but I will ask him anyway… Please Santa, take rust away from my nostalgic car!
Or bring an early Honda S-series, a 600, 800, whatever the elves can get their magical hands on! A Z31 is nice too.
