In the 27 years Chris Hoffman has owned his 1987 Honda CRX Si he’s seen his model of choice transform from econobox to tuner king to Japanese classic. Now his well-preserved car is also the subject of Petrolicious‘ latest video, titled “Original Fanboy.” As it happens, Chris is a friend of JNC and Honda owner in triplicate, who goes by “The Black CRX” around these parts. Very nice video! My first car was a white ’84 CRX 1.5i (100hp, 825kg). Great to drive, but is was very rotten unfortunately. Always driven Honda’s since, my TA22 is my first non-Honda.

Beautiful! Wish I’d have bought one…

Unusual that you were a 14-year-old, and went for a small, fuel-efficient car. When I was 14, it was Trans Am and Z28 (wanted a wheel-stander!). What’s more unusual, is that your mom was into sports cars and performance and all that!

Obviously, you’re in one of those locales that doesn’t use road salt. I’d be afraid to use it too much – not for any mechanical questions – for the idiots out on the road.

Oh yeah – 9.1 sec 0-60 may not be phenomenal anymore, but it’s still a respectable number.

I want a car like that, something that I bought brand new and kept all its life. And I didn’t know CR-X has hit $10k. Get’em cheap while you still can! I just saw a perfect example on BAT the other day…

I had a black ’87 SI just like this one that I flogged around the Malibu Canyons ten years ago. I stripped the interior on it, and rolled up the windows and closed the sunroof a handful of times the few years I owned it! It was a stark contrast to the new shiny SUVs that populated Hermosa Beach where I lived. I worked at a Ferrari Shop at the time and fashioned a Stinger Exhaust from the ANSA tip off a vintage 330! The car’s nickname was the “Roach”, and i even made a logo in the factory script on the tail filler panel to say “ROACH” in place of the CRX logo! More than a few people were fooled when I would tell them these things were called Roaches in Japan! I had fun times with that car- I ended up selling that thing to a buddy when I moved to Arizona, I haven’t seen a little black Roach missing a sunroof and it’s plastic front fenders, I hope the little Roach kept other ’87s like this one on the road…
