Nissan Australia has published a tribute video celebrating over six decades of the iconic Patrol nameplate down under. As production of the 5.6-litre V8-powered Y62 draws to a close, the film highlights how the Patrol evolved into a foundational piece of Australian off-roading history while teasing the upcoming Y63 generation.
The video showcases a chronological lineup of every key Australian Patrol generation in action. It begins with the historic G60 Datsun Patrol from Nissan Australia’s official heritage fleet. Nissan acquired and restored this specific G60 in 2011, even using it to re-enact the historic 1962 Simpson Desert crossing for its 50th anniversary.
It’s followed by a 1984 160-Series MK Patrol in Acrylic Bronze, a turbo-diesel “Luxury Pack” owned by Melbourne Patrol enthusiasts Darren and Fiona Peterson. It still wears its original 1980s paint and graphics despite having over 240,000 km on the clock. The Petersons also lent their 1992 Y60-Series GQ Patrol to the video. The pristine short-wheelbase DX model has well over 250,000 km on the chassis.
Next up is a silver 2016 Y61 GU Patrol Legend Edition, a late-production special edition that’s one of only 300 built and kept by Nissan as part of its heritage fleet. It was equipped with a full suite official accessories such as an airbag-compatible bull bar with factory-installed Warn winch, intake snorkel, full-length roof rack, heavy-duty tow bar, and Legend Edition body decals and a branded soft spare-wheel cover.
The outgoing Y62 generation marks the end of the V8 era, a refined but capable workhorse favored by Australian tourers and commercial operators. Lastly, we have the new Y63 model (sold as the Armada in the US).
From the leaf-sprung G60 to the high-tech Y63, the procession highlights a lineage built on genuine durability as the torch is passed to the latest generation. Australia: it’s like an alternate universe where the Toyota Land Cruiser actually had some competition.
