The ND Mazda Roadster is already a good-looking and curvy car, a design feat that’s pretty difficult achieve on a small platform. Its lines evoke a natural connection to the very curvaceous FD RX-7. They pair so well, in fact, that it’s surprising it has taken this long for someone to create an aftermarket kit that transforms an ND to an FD.
The kit is called the Neo-7 and it’s by Result Japan. You may recall them as the company that made a big splash at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January with their Neo86, an AE86-style pop-up headlight nose for the Toyota 86.
Compared to the Neo-7, that was a much simpler kit. Here, almost no line is left untouched, only the general hood contours, rear haunches, and RF roofline are left in tact. It looks surprisingly good, especially from the top view. From Result’s renderings it also looks like there will be spoiler and spoiler-less versions. It would be amazing if the retractable roof RF mechanism still worked with the kit.
Result Japan has not revealed the cost of the Neo-7, but its 14-piece Neo86 kit costs ¥860,000 ($5300 USD). This looks to be more extensive, so we’d expect a heftier price tag. The Neo-7 kit will be shown to the public at the 2027 Tokyo Auto Salon in January.
But…why???
Very reminiscent of the “Ferrari” body kits for the Fiero. Nobody was fooled, and the owners of said abominations never heard the people laughing behind their back,
There were some very convincing Fiero 308 kits and some resultant lawsuits, but yeah – those were tackier than a goldtone Bolex watch.
This, on the other hand, feels tongue in cheek. I dig it. Imagine a rotary-wrapped FD with this kit – call it the RX-5 (I know… not a Cosmo).
Anyone remember how popular Z3 body kits were for the NA? Now those were an abomination, dressing up a great car to look like a far worse one. Easiest way to spot a shallow badge snob in early oughties SoCal.
Considering most people want an FD just for the looks (understandably), this gets them most of the way there.
Lots of newbies on RX groups who’ve never changed oil talk about engine swapping before having even driven one.
This makes me interested in an ND. Wish it wasn’t still a convertible, though.
I usually like shooting brake versions but in this case, it just winds up looking like a 2 door Mazda 3, a testament to the 3’s design.
