In 2003, Fuji Speedway was shut down for a year in order for a major redesign. It wouldn’t be its first, but it would be substantially different than any of the previous configurations. To celebrate the last days of the 4.4 km era, Best Motoring sent Motoharu Kurosawa onto the track in a replica Hakosuka Skyline GT-R race car for one last blast.
There’s nothing like the raw sounds of the Nissan-Prince S20 a full wail. With twin cams and four valves per cylinder, it sounds like a motor far ahead of its time. Intercut with footage of Hakosuka GT-Rs racing in period, the video is a JNCer’s dream. Throw in more archival images and video of assorted race cars, everything from Honda S800s to Group C prototype racers, and its a touching send-off to one of the greatest eras of Fuji Speedway.
“…a replica Hakosuka Skyline GT-R…”
It’s a genuine ‘Hakosuka’ Skyline GT-R. All C10-series Skylines are ‘Hakosuka’ Skylines, and if it left the factory as a genuine GT-R then it will always be a genuine GT-R.
R-Factory modified the car to look like one of the 1971 season works PMCS team KPGC10 race cars, but under the skin its mechanical spec is very far from stock and nothing like the period works race cars either, as Kurosawa alludes to in the clip.
Hi Alan. I forgot to add “race car” at the end of that first paragraph. Wish I could understand Japanese too, but I enjoyed watching the video in spite of that.
I have this one on DVD, it’s the best. The sound of that S20 is just fantastic
This footage crops up quite often on Youtube (I think Best Motoring itself has previously uploaded it) but it’s always an absolutely pleasure to watch. That scream along the main straight might be one of my favourite noises produced by a car.
This engine wail is my favorite – the second is Alex Lloyd getting all nutty while driving the BRE Datsun 510 – start at 5:24……….turn up the speakers.
