MINICARS: 2016 Hot Wheels Nissan Fairlady Z, Datsun 620 in white

2016 Hot Wheels Nissan Fairlady Z

Turns out that maroon and pink Hot Wheels Fairlady Z was a “factory custom” (a car purposefully painted incorrectly at the plant) after all. Here’s the actual 2016 Hot Wheels Nissan Fairlady Z in the correct blue that we approved on the e-sheet and patterned after designer Jun Imai’s real-life 260Z.

See the resemblance? The leaked Hot Wheels photo is also wearing the correct mainline wheels now too.

Meanwhile, in other news, the Lamley Group is reporting that the Datsun 620 is set to make a reappearance in an upcoming Walmart-exclusive lineup of pickup trucks. The colors are fantastic, white base with red and blue stripes, reminiscent of old Nissan service vehicle colors. Others in the set include a slammed Nissan Titan and lifted Toyota Tundra. Look for them late fall or early winter.

NIce; I should have guessed it’d be modeled after Imai’s own car. He already modeled the awesome custom Datsun 510 wagon after his own (and I’ve only ever seen that one released as one of the more expensive “collector” series with rubber tires, etc, for like $5-6, Odd. So far I’ve got the Datsun 510, the 510 wagon, the Datsun 620, the 80’s RX-7, the 1971 Celica, the NSX, the AE86, the 1991 Civic hatch, the Gen 1 Nissan Skyline GT-R race car (two versions), the Gen 2 GT-R (kenmeri). Can’t think of any others. I hope I didn’t miss anything good; I stopped working at Walmart a year ago, and I don’t get first dibs on the Hot Wheels any more! =( (I’ve got various modern Japanese cars too; the Silvia, the 350 and 360Z, Gen 5 and 6 GT-R’s, maybe others). Hot Wheels has been doing well with cool old cars latley (as Matchbox seems to be focusing more on “kid oriented” toys rather than real cars, Hot Wheels is moving away from the Hot Rod caricature” that thye used to rely on, and making more really cool cars. They released a 1971 Ford Escort RS1800 recently! And an Alfa Romeo Giulia, and a BMW 3.0 CSL! Hope they keep at it. Only so many variants of the 69 Camaro with big wheels you person can handle!
