Lexus LS400 from ‘Street Fighter’ bonus stage made real

The most abused car in history has come to life. The Bonus Stage car from the Street Fighter II video game, in which your character must senselessly destroy a luxury sedan for points, now has a real-life counterpart in all its pixelated glory. It’s a promotion by The General Insurance to tie in to the upcoming Street Fighter movie.

The original Street Fighter II car was unnamed, but it was clearly a Lexus LS400. In the loosely framed plot of the game, your character enters a street fighting tournament set up as a front for a criminal organization. You must work your way up to the final boss, defeating other fighters along the way. Somewhere along the way, you’re asked to destroy a Lexus for bonus points. There’s a whole background on how the car-smashing bonus stage became a tradition in the Street Fighter games, but we won’t get into it here.

To promote the movie, The General commissioned the car from Vehicle Effects, an Los Angeles-based company that builds cars for movies and  has worked on vehicles for the Fast and Furious franchise. Fortunately, the base Lexus used in this build was already pretty beat up from the looks of it.

The car even has pixelated upholstery on the interior, a shift lever that resembles a joystick, and arcade cabinet-style coin slots that activate seat warmers. It’s not simply a wrap job, either. You can see that certain elements like the grille, mirrors, and door handles have that Lego-like shape to mimic the pixel art.

The movie cast was on hand to pose with the car when it was revealed at ComplexCon in Los Angeles at over the weekend. You can actually win the car, along with a cash prize of $25,400.69 by entering a lottery. The winner will be chosen on November 18, while the Street Fighter movie opens on October 16.
