Lexus digital gauges mimics that of classic Toyota 2000GT, AE86, and more

At the Japan Mobility Show last year Lexus unveiled the LF-LZ, an electric flagship concept. We didn’t pay much attention to it at the time because looked like any number of EV concepts developed by various automakers over the last few years, just with some sharper edges. There didn’t seem to be anything relevant to classic Toyotas, but we were wrong! Recently Lexus shared a nifty feature of the LF-LZ, the ability to have its gauge cluster mimic the instruments of a number of classic Toyotas.

The brief video shows the ability to scroll through a menu of vintage Toyotas via a touchscreen to the left of the main driver’s screen. Each flick brings up a rotating image of the car’s exterior as if you’re perusing a Gran Turismo menu. From off-road rigs like the FJ40 Land Cruiser to the ultimate luxury sedan like a modern Century to a classic sports car like the 2000GT, there’s something for everyone. Want to live out your Initial D dreams? Pick the panda AE86. Pretend you’re charging down the Mulsanne straight? There’s a GR010 Le Mans race car.

The video settles on the only Lexus-branded car shown, a LFA. There’s no word on whether the selection changes the driving behavior of the LF-ZL at all, or if the LFA’s sonorous V10 gets added to the soundtrack or not. It shouldn’t be difficult to add more cars to the list, either. An A80 Supra or Lexus IS300 chronograph would be obvious choices, but let’s get a really deep cut and see the A70 digi-dash complete with TEMS display!

We don’t know if the LF-ZL will make it to production, but the swappable gauges can. They should be insertable into any car with a digital cluster without too much difficulty.  That way even if we’re commuting in a new car we can at least imagine we’re in something a little cooler.

More driver distraction worthless waste. Will it play the SS Minnow navigation pack too? More is not more.
