Can you identify this awesome Japanese-style sled? No? Well, don’t beat yourself up too bad — it was a trick question. That’s because the car is a Russian VAZ 2106 steeped in vintage JDM style. With Hoshinos, bolt-on flares, shakotan stance and a JDM license plate (not to mention a giant banzai flag) this low-life Lada has got the look down pat. That’s it, folks, kyuusha kulture has gone worldwide.
This car was spotted at an event called the Only Dropped Picnic 2011.
The rear end has quite a Toyota Corona look to it. And the front is almost 510/1600 style, with the overall style almost Prince Skyline’ish.
Sweet looking ride but those rims aren’t Works they’re Hoshinos.
So, who’s going to be first to do a kyuusha Chevy Vega?
How about his little number I did awhile ago?

Err, that’s bosozoku. But it’s all related.
Also looks like a Fiat, quite a bit.
Actually it is restyled fiat 124.
It is. The VAZ 210x-series cars (aka Lada Zhiguli) are based on the Fiat 124. The original 2101 was a direct copy of the 124 sedan; this later 2106 model had a boxy Fiat 131-style front end added.
Nigel has it exactly right. From Wikipedia (which is, as we know, always correct):
“The VAZ-2106 introduced in December 1975 was an updated version of VAZ-2103, really which was based on Fiat 124 Special T 1972, featuring different interiors and new 1.6 L engine. 2106 is the oldest and the most popular rear-drive model of AvtoVAZ…”

I think zhiguli means testicles or similar lol!
You have made some decent points there. I checked on the net for more information about the issue and found most people will go along with your views on this website.
Yes, I could identify it.
Ben, you could have offered a JNC bottle of vodka for a prize!
Haha, wish I’d thought of that!
I knew the Ladas had potential, but I didn’t know they could look this good…
Here are a couple more photos)

That’s funny. It’s kind of like when my 510 was primer gray I had a sickle and hammer on the front corner of my hood. If anybody ever asked what it was I’d tell them it was a Lada.

The really cool thing about a Lada is that it is a car that time has forgotten. Much like the Hindustan Ambassador (1955 Morris Oxford made in India), 1989 Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift (built in Pakistan) or the 1991 Nissan Sentra (Mexico’s Tsuru), the Lada is still produced today. It sells for around $5,000 in the former republics that made up the USSR and I believe is still exported to Cuba, Africa, South America and the Middle East. The only real difference is that newer ones ( model 2107) have a different grille and headlights than the 2105/2106. Russia still produces a variant of the 1970’s GAZ Volga today as well and it is still called the Volga. It has had a nose and tail treatment but is still based on the same car that came out as the GAZ 24 in 1968 (the “new” model was introduced in 1982). There is even a 4×4 they have built since the 70’s -the Lada Niva. It’s one of the things I find refreshing about the Russian auto market. Durability is more important than style and so robust, bush mechanic friendly designs stay in production for an eternity. The only bad thing is that there is no way to bring them to the US as our safety and emissions regulations have moved on even if the developing world has not.
I am pretty sure there is a way to register one here in Texas since we have the rolling 25 year emissions exemption.
I would love to import one and build it up like this one or maybe like the white posted elsewhere here on JNC. Would be sweet to drop a 3T-C or 4A-g into one. 😀
Хахахах…..))) Если вы не ездили на классике, вы не видели жизни! Советую всем Американцам приобрести хотя бы 1 экземпляр.
Hahaha … ..))) If you do not went to the classics, you will not see life! I advise all Americans to buy at least one instance.
