Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was gifted a scale model of her 1991 Toyota Supra

When Japan elected Sanae Takaichi as Prime Minister in October 2025 car enthusiasts were excited to learn that she owned a 1991 Toyota Supra 2.5GT Twin-Turbo Limited. She described it as the first car she’d ever bought with her own money and it was clearly cherished. Earlier this year, the PM was presented with a scale model of her beloved Supra.

The model Supra appears to have used a 1/24 plastic kit from Hasegawa as its fo undation, but with some custom touches to match Takaichi’s actual car. It was built by the owner of Kushiro Base, a hobby shop in Hokkaido that specializes in plastic model kits and radio control cars.

According to a post on Kushiro Base’s social media account, the kit came with a manual transmission, but since Takaichi’s Supra is an automatic an AT gear selector was custom-made for the model. The body was also painted in the exact pearl white color of the actual car after several rounds of paint mixing, and the model bears the license plate numbers of Takaichi’s Supra as well.

The finished model was placed in an Tamiya acrylic display case and given to Representative Takako Suzuki to pass onto the Prime Minister. “Wow, everything is exactly like the original!” Takaichi exclaimed when Suzuki presented the car. Not many world leaders can claim to have a custom model of their real car. Speaking of which, Takaichi’s actual Supra is now on loan at the Toyota Automobile Museum, where it will be on display until May 24.

That’s such a cool story. A world leader who actually owns and cherishes a JZA70 Supra is already rare enough, but the detail about the hobby shop owner custom making an automatic gear selector just to match her exact car is really wholesome. The pearl white paint matching after several rounds of mixing shows how much care went into it. And the fact that the real car is now in the Toyota Automobile Museum even temporarily is pretty special for enthusiasts to go see in person.
