The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R might be decades old, but aftermarket parts are still coming. Case in point: Impul has revived its GT Bumper. It hearkens back to the original Impul GT Bumper from when the R34 was available new, itself derived from the R34-bodied GT500 race cars that competed in JGTC.
Known for its distinctive wide, intercooler-feeding intake, the flipped-T shape was most commonly found on Team Impul’s iconic Calsonic GT-R that ran in the All-Japan Touring Car Championships GT500 class in the early 2000s. For road cars, the intake incorporated even the turn signals for an imposing presence.
The original GT Bumper was made of FRP and created to bring that visage to the streets. It costs ¥141,000, or approximately $1125 USD at the time. It graced the nose of the Impul demo car, which ran a Calsonic 27mm core radiator and a tuned RB26 making over 450 ps (a $10,000 engine in 2002 dollars).
The revived bumper isn’t a carbon copy. The flanking ducts are now blacked out rather than body colored and incorporated into the negative space of the intake. Its angular edges befit the sharp lines of the R34 and emphasize its wide stance and flows seamlessly into the R34’s fenders. Somehow it manages to retain the essence of the original while the updates modernize the design for today.
The reborn Impul GT Bumper has just gone on sale in Japan and costs ¥253,000 (approximately $1600 USD) not including installation and paint, and can be used with any BNR34 except the Z-Tune.
