The Honda Super Cub and Hello Kitty have a lot in common. Both are Japanese icons, both were among the first in their respective markets to catch fire with non-Japanese audiences, and both have logged sales numbers that would stagger Warren Buffet. Now these two deceptively cute juggernauts have joined forces to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 50th birthday.
The Honda Super Cub is the best-selling motorized vehicle in history, having surpassed 100 million units sold in 2017, the same time it turned 60 years old. Hello Kitty, created in 1974 by artist Yuko Shimizu, is one of the world’s most recognizable drawn characters and is estimated to be worth $80 billion. To celebrate half a century of the mouthless illustrated cat, Honda has created a limited edition Super Cub.
Available with either a 50cc or 110cc engine, the Hello Kitty edition Super Cub has a number of cosmetic details that make it special. The Magna Red paint is said to match the color of Hello Kitty’s bow, which also appears on the Super Cub logo at the bike’s front. Two unique Side covers depict a bas relief kitty on one side, and a printed face on the other
The seat features a subtle monogram Hello Kitty pattern that’s only visible on some sides of the saddle. The speedometer also has Hello Kitty branding on it and the font of the numbers is in “Kitty style”.
Last but not least, the rear fender is adorned with the words “Hello Kitty” in the character’s classic font. Each Super Cub also comes with a special key depicting Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary.
The Honda Super Cub Hello Kitty edition will cost ¥330,000 ($2,120 USD) for the 50cc version and ¥385,000 ($2,470) for the 110cc. That’s an ¥83,000 ($530 USD) premium over the regular bikes, but there are probably enough fanatical Hello Kitty collectors out there to pat that price. Honda is taking orders for the bike until November 24, but only in Japan.
Curious how much these things will be worth in 10,15, 20 years? I would drive one.
These are adorable! I wish they were available in the US.
smart Cars, I believe, had a Hello Kitty option, in pink with stickers. What was funny was that a football linebacker, dunno who, BOUGHT ONE and, posed with it. I am SURE that nobody ever kidded him over it!
