Forget the Black Gold, Black & Red, or even the Activision Pace Car, this must be the rarest of all the 280ZXs. We’ve been talking about the S130 chassis a lot lately, but if you can indulge us here’s one more mention. In 1983, Midori Melon Liqueur sponsored a contest in which the grand prize was a Midori Green Datsun 280ZX. The tie-in makes sense because although the melon liqueur hails from Mexico, it’s actually a product of Suntory, the Japanese brewery (“midori” is the Japanese word for “green”). However, this isn’t the only rare, green S130.
There was also a factory Citrus Green for 1979, color code 661. Even though it was a factory color, none of us can ever recall seeing more than two examples. In any case, the discovery of the Midori Green Datsun began when a few of us were gathered ’round the JNC water cooler wondering if the above Citrus Green Datsun 280ZX was the real deal or an aftermarket job. Ratsun admin and all around Z-car nut known as “Bleach” confirmed the the citrus green car as legit and also pointed us to the Midori car.
I’m more surprised you didn’t harp on the Datsun the Pawn stars had on recently.
Thanks for posting this! Lately, I’ve fallen in love with my HS130 Fairlady and it soothes the driving urge to learn new info and see awesome pics from my favorite website and home page JNC! ^__^
Cool. I always wonder where these sweepstakes cars end up, and it sounds like this one is still around. If he pointed you to the Midori car, do you have pictures of it?
