BRE Nissan 370Z Revealed at the Mitty

BRE Nissan 370Z vs Mazda MX-5

Don’t you hate it when you get all dressed up for a party and then someone else shows up wearing the exact same livery? A couple of weeks ago Mazda revealed a tribute to the famous Datsun 240Zs of Peter Brock and John Morton, right down to the number 46.

Well, Nissan wasn’t about to let a rival steal their prom dress! Two days later, they announced that they too were going to The Mitty with a BRE theme, and released nothing but two images of a NISMO 370Z in the paint booth. Hmmm, curious. So now that the big day is here, the question is, who wears it better? Larger images below the fold.

    Nothing short of Gorgeous!!

Might I also add, the Nismo front facia is the ONLY way to go. It gives the Z34 that extra length it needs to look not as ‘short and stubby’ as it does in stock form. I absolutely love it.

I hate to say it, but the little Mazda looks much better in BRE livery than the Z. The 370 still looks short and stubby, and the Nismo aero package only added a front wing and a bumper which wouldn’t look out of place on an old jet fighter. The MX-5 has flowing, rounded lines reminescent of classic roadsters of the 1960s (much like the good old Datsun Roadster in fact), but unlike some styling excersises of today (think Fiat 500 and the new Mini – among others) it’s not “retro”. It manages to be classic and contemporary at the same time, so the Mazda gets my vote.

    In case you’re wondering – I’m a 240Z owner.

The shape of the new Z doesn’t really lend itself well to the BRE livery w/out making too many compromises. I think the Mazda pulls off the lines better, but I still respect Nissan for acknowledging its history. Hopefully we will see more of this in the future!

I saw both in person today. The thing is with the Miata is that when it races, it doesn’t have the top. That detracts from the paint scheme IMHO. I think the 370Z would look better if they brought the red down lower on the C pillars. So as presented today, I give a slight nod to the 370Z. However, neither hold a candle to the Roadsters, Z cars and 510s that were there today as tribute cars or actual genuine BRE cars.

  6. Bob Black says:

who cares. They both look AWESOME!!! Great work both companies

  7. Ben says:

SteveJ: Good observation. More red on the 370Z would definitely make it look better.

  8. Mark says:

They made a major blunder around the C-pillar/rear quarters on the 370z, really needs the red paint fill to come down and follow the hip line of the car, and perhaps the BRE graphic in the big empty space. Mazda executed it better for sure.

IMO it looks like Nissan ‘interpreted’ the BRE livery, while Mazda copied it.

  9. Sarcasmo says:

They need to bring the paint scheme lower on the C pillar of the Nissan. Although, the Miata looks good… there are NO Bre Mazdas. So the Nissan gets the nod. Also, that Playboy windshield banner on the Mazda looks tacky. Take that idiotic thing off.

having seen both cars in person, I think they are both cool but for different reasons. i Mazda has the attitude that Nissan had in the 70’s racing is at the heart of what they do, and what they build. It would be nice to see Nissan provide an inexpensive fast sports car for the masses.

As for the 370Z. Heritage! nice to see Nissan make the nod for 40 years of racing technology. The 370Z looks sharp and is a T2 racer. Who is going to get to drive this one? I hope John gets the nod, after all it is his number…

I would expect to see both the Mazda MX-5 and the Nissan 370Z with a certain 240Z I know pretty well coming to a magazine rack near you soon.
