Rumors about the next-generation Toyota Supra are swirling again. It’s good news for the purists this time around the rumor mill, because it’s saying the car will be an all-Toyota effort. Furthermore, it was believed that the GR Supra would be electrified. Now sources from Japan are saying it’s still going to burn gasoline.
According to the latest edition of Best Car, Toyota will power the next Supra with a turbocharged inline-four hybrid. It’ll be based off of a new 2.0-liter engine of Toyota’s own design, not the current Supra’s optional 2.4-liter. This would see to negate one of the biggest arguments for teaming up with BMW for the A90 Supra — an insistence on the traditional inline-six (which we always suspected was BS).
The car will remain rear-wheel-drive, and the hybrid system one that supplements the engine. No electric motors will be driving the wheels. The powertrain will likely include an automatic transmission, but the chassis, engine, and body will all be from Toyota. The partnership with BMW is done.
The target date is 2026, which means a close-to-production prototype will likely be shown at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show (formerly Tokyo Motor Show). Based on experience, that would be followed up with a modified version shown at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. We should probably be grateful that there will be an A100 Supra at all, but if all the Toyota rumors are true, including those of a new MR2 and Celica, the once-“boring” car company would be almost single-handedly keeping attainable sports cars alive.
Glad to see Toyota is doing this. I suspect it is being driven in part by BMW not developing a next generation Z4 platform. The Supra was always the technology/performance flagship and to have it associated with BMW, regardless of how good the chassis and drivetrain are, just seemed like a slap in the face to Supra history. Lets hope that they style it without all the fake scoops the current model has.
that is cool news!
