Gran Turismo 7 adds FJ40 Land Cruiser, Mazda Roadster race car, and even a RAV4
One of the best things about the Gran Turismo series is its inclusion of cars that aren’t necessarily the most powerful exotics. Its embrace of obscure classics, everyday cars, and vehicles that have no business being on a race track are what endeared us to the series. Anyone remember slinging a Honda Element around the ‘Ring in GT4? For its September 2025 update, Gran Turismo 7 is adding some truly unexpected machinery. Continue reading

The Japan native was born in 1947 in Nagasaki, Japan and studied engineering at Seikei University in Tokyo but then left for America to enroll in the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California to study automotive design. QotW: What would you do without a car?
Today, Septemeber 22, is Car Free Day in many cities around the world, including nine in Japan. It asks citizens to refrain from driving in urban centers to consider what life might be like without the traffic and environmental impacts associated with cars. We recently moved to a place that’s extremely walkable, a rarity in Los Angeles. There’s a supermarket, dry cleaner, ramen restaurant, and (because California) dispensary all within minute’s stroll. I must say that on a day-to-day basis it’s convenient and enjoyable. Could I do without a car? Sometimes I fantasize about focusing my entire car obsession into Hot Wheels and Tamiya kits, but ultimately and I think I’d miss the real thing too much.

Nissan to close 46-year-old San Diego design studio
Nissan is on a cost-cutting rampage, and the latest to fall are its studios. Design centers in southern California and São Paulo, Brazil are to be shuttered as part of the company’s
“Re:Nissan” restructuring plan that hopes to bring the carmaker back into the black by 2026. It’s a shocking move, particularly for Nissan Design America, which has been a presence in the San Diego, California area since 1979. Continue reading
Robert Redford helped launch Paul Newman’s Nissan racing career
Legendary actor and filmmaker Robert Redford passed away yesterday at the age of 89. Though he wasn’t as well-known for being a car guy as his buddy Paul Newman, Redford did have a penchant for vintage cars and racing. As it happens, he helped get Newman hooked on motorsports, and the car he did it with, in a remarkable coincidence, also helped make the Nissan Skyline the icon that it is in Japan. Continue reading
Honda NSX celebrates 35 years with retrospective video
The groundbreaking Honda NSX forever changed the world when it debuted on September 14, 1990. The slogan in its home-market ads read ,”Our Dreams Come True.” Not your dreams, but ours, as in the Honda engineers who had sought from the company’s founding to challenge the world’s best with racing machines of their own making. QotW: What’s the best Japanese car for a midlife crisis?
Years ago you gave up the sport compact with the cold air intake and blue HIDs. There was a kid on the way and you needed the cash for a minivan. In a blink decades passed. You no longer need to slurp instant ramen every meal to save up for a set of rims, but even if you had new wheels there’s nothing cool to put them on. The kids think family trips are “cringe” and would rather be on social media than utter a single syllable to mom and dad. They Uber everywhere anyway, so why are you commuting in a 7-seater? “That’s it,” you think, “I’m going down to the automall and regaining my youth!”

Suzuki GSX-R documentary’s retired engineers discuss the trials of building a world-class superbike
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Suzuki GSX-R750, a motorcycle that revolutionized the game. A MotoGP bike for the masses. To mark the occasion Suzuki has released a 35-minute documentary about the bike’s development. Amazingly, the company brought back key engineers who worked on multiple generations of the GSX-R out of retirement and let them speak candidly about their projects, a rarity among manufacturer-produced videos. Even if you prefer four wheels over two, it’s worth a watch. Continue reading
Toyota reissues 4AG cylinder block and head through Gazoo Racing Heritage Parts Program
Last month Toyota teased a grand plan involving its heritage parts program and the venerable 4A-GE engine. Specifics weren’t disclosed, but the reality is far grander than we imagined. Turns out Toyota is reproducing the entire block and head of the 4A-GE engine that powered the AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno and AW11 MR2. Continue reading
Nissan Z Heritage Edition brings Midnight Purple stateside
It’s hard to make a heritage edition of a car that’s packed with retro cues. The RZ34’s sheetmetal already mimics that of the S30 and the Z32 generations, so when it came time to make a Heritage Edition of the Z, Nissan was in a bit pickle. Or, make that a plum, because the Z is now resplendently draped in Midnight Purple. Continue reading

Next year the theme of the famed event will be, for the first time, ‘Icons of Japanese Motorsport’. Continue reading
QotW: What automotive scenario would you conjure up on the holodeck?
Today, September 8, is Star Trek Day, the date that the original series hit US airwaves in 1966. As much as we dig the scifi series, one thing it lacked was any automotive content whatsoever. Even when the characters entered the holodeck, a room that could simulate a realistic representation of anything you want, these spacefarers from 2364 inevitably chose scenarios like the wild west or a Sherlock Holmes mystery where no cars existed. There was no “Computer, put me at the Toyota stand at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show,” or “Computer, let me drive the a 1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R at Fuji Speedway with the deadly Daiichi banking.” What a waste!

Which sixth-gen Honda Prelude looks best?
I clearly remember when the last Honda Prelude came out. By the time the fifth-gen came out for the 1997 model year the entire country had been fully consumed by tuner fever. The first BB6 I ever saw outside the pages of Car and Driver was already slammed, illuminating the night with blue HIDs, and traveling in a caravan of modded Civics and Integras. With the sixth-gen Honda Prelude having officially debuted yesterday, let’s see which kit looks best on it. Continue reading
Nissan will finally give the Z NISMO the manual transmission it’s deserved all along
When Nissan debuted Z NISMO debuted two years ago, despite offering the type of rear-wheel-drive sports car doesn’t cost six figures, something that’s in very short supply these days, they managed to piss everyone off by making it automatic only. Well, now a top exec is promising to rectify that mistake by giving the top Z a proper stick shift. Continue reading
