Netflix’s ‘Senna’ trailer: Brace your eyes for glorious McLaren-Honda MP4 action

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming miniseries about celebrated Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. Considered one of the greatest drivers of all time, Senna won three world championships while driving for McLaren-Honda, an era of dominance that is still regarded as one of the sport’s most memorable. And if the footage from the trailer is any indication, Senna will be a thrilling ride.

The trailer opens with Senna, played by Gabriel Leone, at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. As he takes off from the starting line, shots of the McLaren-Honda speeding dramatically around Interlagos are cut with images from his life. Senna would go on to win this race, the first time in his eight years as an F1 driver that he stood on the top podium spot at his home circuit.

Despite our knowledge of this outcome, the beautifully woven scenes of Senna’s intense driving and various flashbacks, of childhood, romance, and conflict, still manage to convey a sense of drama. In other words, it looks good.

Senna is comprised of six episodes, and is not to be confused with the 2010 film, also titled Senna. That one was a documentary, while this will be a scripted series. Netflix hasn’t said when Senna will be released, only that it will be later this year, which happens to be the 30th anniversary of his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. If you need your McLaren-Honda MP4/4 fix as you wait, there’s always the recently released Lego set.

When I heard Ayrton Senna died, I was very sad. Probably the only time a racer’s death affected me that much. There’s the old cliche, “He knew of the dangers, no one forced him to race.” Be that as it may, it took nothing away from the tragic end. He is still missed. Will wait to see if it covers his life as it should.

in case you end up wanting to have a replica of senna’s mc laren…

Crespi is an Argentine builder with a long history manufacturing formula vehicles. They are going to manufacture a series with different powers. I don’t know if they would dare to homologate it for the street like Ford did a few years ago with its Formula Ford 1.0 ecoboost.

Regarding Ayrton… it coincided with the death of my godfather, and I felt both of them in the same way. I remember talking to an uncle and also admitting that I cried for that loss. He transcended the human beyond the pilot, it is inexplicable for many that even today with a “modest” record compared to other pilots he is so respected by previous and current pilots. I think that among peers, respect and idolatry is something very difficult, with everything that has happened over time, I have never heard any driver referred to in the same way by Prost or Mansell or Häkkinen.
