A 93-year-old grandpa driving his Mazda RX-7 in a video game takes internet by storm

A 93-year old Japanese man playing racing games on his grandson’s computer has gone viral. YouTuber Olivin Corp created a channel featuring his gearhead grandpa at the helm of various virtual cars four months ago. and the most heartwarming video — of ojisan driving a car that owned in real life decades ago — has garnered 3 million views.

That car would be a first-generation Mazda RX-7, rendered in Forza in the same silver color that grandpa’s Savanna was painted in. It was his favorite of all the cars he’s owned, and according to Olivin Corp he often reminisces about his beloved rotary.

In another video, he’s seen behind the wheel of a Subaru WRC car, Honda S2000, and a dark blue S30 Nissan Fairlady Z like the one in Wangan Midnight. The video is titled “Devil Ji” (a play on Wangan Midnight‘s Devil Z, with the ji here meaning “old man” or “grandpa”).

As Olivin Corp explains, his grandfather isn’t a gamer, but he is a car enthusiast. He was a Tokyo taxi driver in the 1960s, and then a truck driver for 20 years. As such, he chooses to play in manual mode, with a clutch and gated shifter controls, and turns off the game’s traction control. That’s hard core.

The 93-year-old voluntarily surrendered his driver’s license seven years ago, as many elderly Japanese do. The games have given him a second chance at driving classics (and some high-dollar exotics). Seeing them bring a smile to his face brings a smile to ours as well. Rock on, ojisan.

AWSOME! Just goes to show, no matter what age you are the true love as a gear head is part of your soul. Kudos to the kids who take care of Grandpa and provide him the ability to live out what he truly loves and enjoys. That smile on grandpa’s face is truly priceless. You couldnt buy that for any amount of money in the world…GREAT STORY!!!
