QotW: What’s the best shade of JNC blue?

Happy Marine Day! Also known as Ocean Day, the third Monday of every July is a Japanese national holiday that celebrates the seas and the bounty they provide for the island nation. On St. Patrick’s Day we asked for the best green. It’s only fitting that we now ask:

What’s the best shade of JNC blue?

Nissan has recognized that the Skyline GT-R’s Bayside Blue is worthy of recreating on the 2015 Juke. Alas, the R34 is too new. Allow us to posit Orion Turquoise Metallic of the A20 Celica. Not only is it an iconic color for the original Toyota sports coupe, it was offered in only the first year of the Celica’s US sales, 1970.

What say you, dear reader? As always, the most entertaining comment by next Monday will receive a prize. Scroll down to see the winner of the last QotW, “What’s the most unlikely JNC?

The winner this week is E-AT_me, who had this prophecy for future JNCers:

Most unlikely? About 20 years from now, all the “kids” are going to want Accords and Camrys. Just wait for it. How cool is it every time at JCCS that you see an old, pristine Accord or Camry? Buy one now. Wait 25 years. Profit.

Omedetou, your comment has earned you a set of decals from the JNC Shop

    HR31 Skyline GTS-R blue-black!

But don´t be too happy about your “earned” decals because I never got mine, for example.

Since it’s recently become a bona-fide JNC, my vote goes to Mariner Blue, as used on the NA MX-5. Really suits the little Mazda’s lines.

My vote for best blue goes to Toyota’s 8b8 Light Blue Metallic. Only available on the MK1 MR2 for the 85-86 model years it is the rarest of the first gen paint codes. More of an Electric Blue, in person a well preserved fully polished 8b8 MR2 flashes by like a light ship out of Tron, resplendid in all it’s 80’s analog glory. Are we stuck in the Master Program? Or is this one of those obvious (but totally cool and groundbreaking) computer effects like in The Last Starfighter? Such a cool color that it made the MR2 page for Wikipedia.

I had an 85 this color, couldnt match it at the paint store either, had to get a color off a Fiat that was a close enough match.

Without a doubt Medium Blue Metallic (8D7) from my 1986 Celica ST-162. Of course I may have a soft spot as it was my first car, but that colour was beautiful. Not too dark, not too light, had awesome hilights in direct sunshine, and really accentuated the subtle curves of the design. A winner for sure.

I hell like the terquois kind of blue that the old hondas and some AE86’s have in the interior. Not enough cars come that cool any more, thats what I love about old cars. all that cool, unique and interesting stuff that came from factory like that and you just dont see it anymore.

See my Nissan/Datsun #562 entry below. I still have the touchup paint can that was sent for my 1967 RL411 sedan. No! It has dried up several decads ago, although the factory paint dot is still vibrant on the lid.

  7. Kane says:

Actualy I think I might have to go with my origonal option, the same blue as my 88 gq patrol. Its the blue on silver colour sceem that alot of them seem to have and I think its looks hell nice. Very nice 2 tone colour sceem, and a very nice blue too.

  8. Michael McDonald says:

My 1967 Datsun #562 “Torquoise” for a better discription

The 2-tone blue ae86 livery intrigues me, but I’ve never seen any pics where the cars paint was in pristine condition, or even ones where the picture is even a decent resolution. Anybody got any?

It may not be considered a nostalgic for many, yet. But I think Subaru’s #74F Sonic Blue is one of the most recognizable and iconic shades of blue. That color brings me tons of memories of the best rallying in the decade of the 1990’s.

  11. gaijinshogun says:

Personal bias…Scandinavian Sky in the 1st Gen U.S. Celica. Offsetting against the original orange ST stripes, it was just wicked.

  12. Darth says:

    Innocent Blue Mica -FD RX-7

  13. E-AT_me says:

Honda bias; Tahitian Green. It’s a teal-blue, and is so striking Hotwheels decided to use it on their EF as the second color release. Everyone loves it.
