The Mazda Miata 30th Anniversary Edition sold out in just four hours after its introduction in February. All 500 allocated to the US market were spoken for during pre-order, but now Mazda is giving 143 buyers who missed out the chance to get one. The company has announced that it will be upping the US allocation of 30th Anniversary Miatas to 643.
After the initial 500 were sold out, buyers were put on a wait list. Mazda didn’t reveal how many people were on that list, but said that it was “hundreds.” There are only 3,000 30th Anniversary cars being built, so Mazda is simply allocating a few more to the US market without changing the total production volume.
As we reported back in February, the car itself doesn’t see any drivetrain improvements, though forged Rays wheels will decrease unsprung weight by a tad. The color, called Racing Orange, is meant to evoke the sunrise at a racetrack according to Mazda, and is exclusive to the 30th Anniversary car. In addition, orange interior trim, stitching, piping, and brake calipers round out the differences. Oh, and there’s also a serial numbered badge.
We have to admit, we’re impressed with how loyal and strong the Miata faithful are in the US. There aren’t a lot of cars that can command this kind of buying frenzy for a limited edition model, unless you’re talking about domestic icons like the Mustang and Corvette, or high end supercar collectibles. At the low end of the market, this is pretty much unheard of, so good for Mazda.
