So this happened on the 405 this morning.

After a long night (and morning) planning the next Touge California, a little Pegasus White dot caught the corner of our eye during Los Angeles’s famously infuriating rush hour.

The unmistakable curves of the Toyota 2000GT added a bit of class to the AM slog. We wondered how many commuters knew what it was.

After jockeying into position with some sweet moves in a Honda Odyssey, we found that it bore Montana plates. Where could it be headed?

    Wow!

Awfully valuable car to cart around on an open flat-bed.

    • No Salsa says:

If the truck tips over a closed container isn’t going to save it !

I can’t tell if it’s an American lhd or rhd model.

For a moment I thought it was going to be some sort of update on the one that was crushed by a tree.

  2. Mercilessmings says:

    Obviously not a HONDA product…….

  3. Dennis says:

    Just another day in LA.

  4. Ben Hsu says:

Funnily enough, my first assumption, like Brett, was who would ship a million dollar car on an open flatbed? It didn’t occur to me that it was actually broken down like Merciless Mings assumed, but I think the latter makes more sense.

For the record, these are known to be very reliable compared to other classics of this age and provenance. The guys at Maine Line Exotics have driven theirs cross-country with no problems.

  5. Jason says:

Ahhhhhh Montana plates! Someone’s saving a ton on taxes! 😉

  6. TofuDelivery says:

what are the chances that JNC catches the one time a 2000GT is being hauled openly in Cali!? makes you wonder what gets moved around in closed containers….

  7. Scotty G says:

If there’s an actual bigfoot or unicorn out there, these guys are going to get a photo of it. Very cool! Although, I just read about a guy who bought a 1970s Buick Apollo online for $5,000 and paid $2,500 to ship it in an enclosed trailer.

  8. rustyra23 says:

That is an original Montana plate from the late 60’s / early 70’s. I am from Montana. Who owned a 2000gt in Montana? barnfind?

  9. John Williams says:

Holy cow Ben. Now that’s sight. I have only seen them in captivity, Never in the wild.

  10. SH Cullman says:

Probably on it’s way to meet a transport truck, not that uncommon in a heavily congested area. Might be on it’s way to an auction or new owner.

    • The auction notion occurred to me as I was drafting the flatbed in my brave Odyssey. The Arizona collector car auctions take place next week, and I thought it might be headed there. I checked the online catalogs of the various auction companies and found that two 2000GTs will be crossing the dais in Scottsdale, but the example I snapped on the 405 isn’t one of them.

  11. Skorj says:

All that time we trained driving and photographing on the Wangan last year pays off! Excellent kyusha-pap camera work…

  12. Will valleau says:

Just saw another pegasus white coupe offered by sotheby’s in a jan 29 auction. Maybe being prpped for show/sale?

    • That was my thought, too, but I compared these shots with RM Sotheby’s auction catalog and there are some differences. The car on the flatbed has black stalks on the fender mirrors and orange front side markers. RM’s car has chrome stalks and clear side markers. I’m certain someone better versed in 2000GT lore than I could point out many other differences.

“Well son that there is what you call a ‘unicorn’.”

  14. LB says:

    Call the towing company.

My bet is that it was going here which is right up the freeway about 30 to 45 minutes from where this picture was taken (Northern San Fernando Valley)

This would make a great story if you haven’t covered Shin already.

I saw this same car in manhatten beach at around 7:30 am
