VIDEO: The ultimate AE86 track battle

In 2005, to commemorate volume number 86, Hot Version invited Japan’s top AE86 to Tsukuba Circuit to lay down some lap times. This era was the peak of innovation for AE86 tuning with the TRD N2 Corolla Levin, driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya, as perhaps the poster child of peak Hachiroku modding.

It’s all captured on video, with 9,500 rpm Toyota 4A-GEs turning in the same one-minute lap times as a Porsche 911 GT3 or an R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R. Famed demo cars from tuners such as NSK, Tec-Arts, Brig Cool Max, KMS Wood Village and Annex μ can be seen in all their glory. These days, AE86s are much more likely to be built as resto-mods with stock-appearing bodywork, so this is likely an era never to be repeated again. Witness it in all its high-revving glory.

    Not been a fan of the recent trend for wide arches on cars. But the form/function of an AE86 in wide-arched N2 spec… that’s something else entirely.

    This “reboot” AE86 N2 series is still running (& is AWESOME!!!). Is pretty much a yearly thing, & it has been a support race for some other series on other tracks around Japan.

    Please see link to the current issues of Hot Version;

    Tsuchiya-san’s car has been through heaps more development, as has all of the other workshop & privateer cars. Orido-san, Taniguchi-san, & heaps of other Pro (& amateur) drivers participate.

    Nothing like the sound of a whole field of 5AG & 7AG Hachis screamin’ ’round (usually fairly sideways!) Tsukuba’s last turn…………..pure heaven!!!!! :):):):):):)

    I remember seeing from TRD that they preferred the coupe over the liftback because they were lighter. The N2 flares from TRD were similar the the body kits that were available to the KP61 Starlets.
