The Ryu Asada Memorial Drive + Fundraiser is a short, 30 minute drive to honor the memory of Hot Wheels and Matchbox designer Ryu Asada. It will take place April 18, 2021 in El Segundo, California starting at 9:00 am. All types of cars are welcome.
UPDATE APRIL 18, 2021: DUE TO THE PARKING SITUATION THE FINISH POINT WILL NOW BE DOCKWEILER BEACH ON YOUTH CENTER DRIVE. IT’S ABOUT HALF A MILE NORTH OF THE ORIGINAL FINISH. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.
UPDATE April 16, 2021: We have reached maximum capacity for this event. You are welcome to meet us at the finish at Dockweiler Beach at approximately 10:00 am. We will have the fundraiser sticker there for purchase. Thank you for your support!
The event is a leisurely, non-competition drive with leading cars around a prescribed route. Each driver must complete the form at the bottom of this page to receive the route details. This is so we can get an estimate of how many cars there will be. If you have friends who would like to participate, please have them complete the form as well so we can have an accurate count of cars.
Please note that the end point will be at Dockweiler Beach. The beach assesses a parking fee to be paid at a self-serve kiosk. You can head directly to the finish and wait for the cars if you do not wish to participate in the drive.
Ryu passed away on March 23, 2021 due to colorectal cancer. As such, the event will be raising money for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. A memorial decal will be available for a small donation to the foundation at the start of the drive.
The green “R” decal represents Ryu’s personal touch on his beloved Acura NSX. A devoted Honda enthusiast, Ryu customized it as a tribute to a safety car from Japan’s famed Suzuka Circuit. A miniature version was also part of the Hot Wheels lineup last year.
