NEWS: Subaru has stopped production of the BRZ

After eight years shining a bright ray of sports coupe hope into the a bleak crossover world, the Subaru BRZ has ceased production. The lines at its Ota, Gunma Prefecture plant have churned out their last BRZs as they prepare to manufacture the next generation. Toyota is expected to make a similar announcement regarding the 86 twin soon.

This was to be expected, as Subaru and Toyota have both announced Final Editions of the BRZ and 86, respectively. A Final Edition BRZ was offered in Germany, while Toyota offered an 86 Black Limited in Japan, mirroring the AE86 Black Edition that marked that model’s swan song.

This means that in Japan, you can no longer order your BRZ to custom spec. If you go to Subaru’s Japanese website, there’s a message that simply states, “We have finished accepting orders for built-to-order manufacturing of the models listed. Orders can only be accepted from stock at retailers.” That means option and color choices are limited to what is sitting on dealer lots.

Hopefully, that means the next generation BRZ and 86 are around the corner. It’s rumored that it will feature Subaru’s FA24 Turbo boxer, bumping displacement from 2.0 to 2.4 liters and output from 205 to 250 horsepower. With a more powerful Supranew Z, and FR Mazda coming, it should be an exciting time for Japanese performance cars.

When this came out were people as mad about toyota having an engine from another company as they are about the MK5 Supra? I honestly don’t remember.

No, I don’t think they were. I was upset because I find Subaru engines unreliable. Then again, I live in the U.S. and drive a lot. To me an unreliable car is one that gets less than 250,000 miles before I need to rebuild the engine. Just finished rebuilding my SR20 after 248K miles! I’m rebuilding a 22R next. Has around 274K on it.

Hell, no one gave a shit that a Toyota was powered by a Subaru motor. After all, it was never a Fast and Furious car, especially since it was in the shadow of the more powerful Impreza WRX.
But to go to BMW to develop the Supra, and PEOPLE. LOST. THEIR. MINDS.

Let’s collectively face it. This car sucked.

It’s all over now…we can formally address the trauma and heal together.
    Hugggsss

This car was born from the same Japanese, S&M mentality that brought you generations of underpowered Miatas. Oh, you want more…and they KNOW it.

Are you gonna get what you want, bad boy???

    NO!

    NO!

    *whip crack*

The FRS/BRZ/86 would be so much cooler if the majority of their owners actually knew and appreciated the AE86.

Instead they just slap on over fenders, 3 piece wheels, and their IG names on their windows.
