MINICARS: Hot Wheels X JNC Datsun 510 Bluebird Wagon “JNC Surf Patrol”

We at JNC recently received a very special surprise from our friends at Hot Wheels — a JNC surf patrol wagon! These photos, taken from one of the conference rooms at the Mattel design center in El Segundo, California, show the 2017 mainline release of the ’71 Datsun Bluebird 510 Wagon casting in its latest colorway. We had no idea the design team was planning something like this, so forgive our inner 5-year-old as we embark on a complete freak out.

If you had told any member of the JNC staff, when we were kids playing with Hot Wheels on our kitchen floors, that one day there’d be a JNC 510 wagon in Hot Wheels form, there’s absolutely no way we would’ve believed you. Words really cannot describe the coolness of this development, which ranks somewhere between blasting a Toyota 2000GT on the Wangan and traveling back in time Quantum Leap style into the body of Kunimitsu Takahashi as he began Nissan’s 1971 season as a driver for the factory Skyline GT-R team. Neither of those has happened, but the Hot Wheels car has.

Designed by Mike McClone, the base color is a dead ringer for 103 Blue, one of the coolest Datsun paint colors from back in the day. White and orange stripes adorn its hood and sides, while the JNC inkan and JCCS logo appear on its rear flanks.

The Datsun 510 wagon, based on Hot Wheels designer Jun Imai’s real car, is one of the most popular castings in the near 50-year history of the brand, so we couldn’t be more excited to make an appearance on it.

We are incredibly stoked and honored, and would like to thank Jun Imai, Ryu Asada, Mike McClone and the rest of the team at Hot Wheels for making our childhood dreams come true. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Such a fun color combo. The Blue inkan is a nice touch, too. Maybe needs to be seen in sticker form??
