Honda and Nissan are still figuring things out

Despite a well-publicized dissolution of merger talks last year, it seems that Honda and Nissan are still talking to each other. The result might not be a marriage, but perhaps more of a rebadging situation. Either way, the two companies have to find a way to take on an increasingly challenging market.

According to a report published yesterday by Automotive News, Honda and Nissan are still talking after merger talks went south a year ago. Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said the ongoing discussions have been “very constructive and very positive” but didn’t elaborate on the details.

One of the main points of discussion has been the increased US tariffs implemented last year by President Donald Trump. “the latest discussions are mostly focused around the US and how we can collaborate in North America, given the difficult environment that we have in tariffs.”

On a recent Honda earnings call, Executive VP Noriya Kaihara said, “We try to explore different possibilities, such as the complementary supply of models to each other.” This sounds like it could mean that Nissan and Honda may rebadge each other’s vehicles in some way.

Mitsubishi, meanwhile, is going along with whatever Nissan decides. “The only thing I can say is discussions are progressing,” said Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato.”If discussions with Nissan and Honda yield results, we hope to incorporate them into our new midterm plan.”

Putting Honda badges on a Nissan will be nothing but a loss for Honda, conversely, Nissan badges on a Honda will be a win for Nissan.

We don’t need no stinkink badges man.
