Details on next Toyota 86, Land Cruiser leaked

We’ve given Toyota a lot of shit recently, but maybe there’s a method to their madness after all. Yesterday, a slide from a dealer meeting was leaked, revealing Toyota’s plans for six models extending to the 2022 model year, including the next-generation 86 and Land Cruiser.

The Future: Toyota + Lexus ??
_____________________________________ [3/23/20] A MASSIVE leak has just unveiled a plethora of plans for Toyota and Lexus over the next few years so let’s dive right in! First up is the all new BRZ and GR86 (yep no more GT86) which will be on a new platform with a 255HP Turbocharged engine, better interior and of course RWD coming in July of 2021. Then a Camry refresh in 2021 with a new generation in 2024 and a Avalon refresh in 2022. Then a new 2021 Corolla Crossover and the Venza is coming back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ? @Allcarnews Industry Update ? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then comes the all new 4Runner and Sequoia coming in 2022 based on the all new 2021 Tundra that will ride on the all new TNGA-F chassis. These will get a TwinTurbo Hybrid V6 and NO MORE V8. Then a new 2024 Tacoma. Lexus is killing off V8 models under the $90k price point and an all new TwinTurbo V8 will debut in the 2022 LC-F. The LS and ES are getting a 2022 refresh and the GS if being killed off and replaced with a Lexus version of the new RWD Toyota Mirai sedan. The all new IS is coming for 2021. An all new NX is coming on the new TNGA-K platform with a new 14in Touchscreen and 5 different powertrains. An all new RX is coming in 2023 and the GX is being replaced in 2023 with a new model. The LX is going to be insane with a TT V6 hybrid in 2022 and will compete with the Bentayga with a TT V8Land. The Landcruiser on the other hand will be turned into a stripped out off roader and lose any sort of luxury focus in favor of hardcore off roading. ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: The best part is all of this is real as it was leaked from a recent dealer conference!! ? ________________________________________ Text by @allcarnews #Toyota #GR #JDM #GazooRacing #GRYaris #RallyRacing ||#powerful #performance #turbocharged #supercharged #advanced #SupercarsRevamped #Supercar #HyperCar #ItsWhiteNoise #carlifestyle #MadWhips #CupGang #Carstagram #BlackList #AmazingCars247 An #allcarnews post

The slide backs up the claims made in a Motor1 article published February 18. At the time, the site published info from a source who attended the dealer meeting, but wouldn’t go as far as posting the photo taken of the slide. That slide was posted yesterday on the allcarnews Instagram account, along with details about the various models. There’s a lot to unpack, so let’s take it one by one, starting with the car JNCers are likely to care most about.

86: According to the leaked slide, The next generation is coming in summer 2021. The post also says it will undergo a name change to GR86, which would align with the promotion of the Gazoo Racing sub-brand with other official names like the GR Supra and GR Yaris.

It will sit on a new RWD platform and have a turbocharged engine with 255 horsepower. As we reported back in April 2018, this will likely be a version of the 2.4-liter Subaru FA24 flat-four. The GR86 will supposedly also have a more refined interior thanks to improved materials.

Corolla: Not that the world needed another crossover, but a Corolla Cross is coming in fall 2021 for the 2022 model year. According to Motor1, it will be built in the new Toyota-Mazda joint factory in Alabama. Our sources say Mazda also plans to build a new SUV there, something a bit more hard core than a crossover.

Camry: The evergreen family sedan will see a refresh in the fall of 2021, with the following generation coming in 2024. The current-gen debuted in 2017, meaning the days of four-year lifecycles for the bread-and-butter sedans are long gone, now that crossovers outsell sedans. Instead, sedans are being put on the back burner and treated more like niche vehicles.

Venza: Speaking of crossovers, a new mid-size model reviving the barely missed Venza name is coming back in the fall for the 2021 model year.

4Runner/Tacoma/Sequoia/Tundra: All three models will share a common platform, called TNGA-F, a version of the Toyota New Global Architecture that underpins nearly all its new vehicles. The Tundra will come first, in late 2021 for the 2022 model year. The 4Runner and Sequoia will follow in 2022 for the 2023 model year. The post warns in all caps, “NO MORE V8.” The most powerful versions will have a twin-turbo V6 gasoline-electric hybrid. The next-gen Tacoma will arrive for the 2024 model year.

Land Cruiser/Lexus LX: It looks like reports of the Land Cruiser’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. There will be more differentiation between the flagship SUVs, with the Lexus LX gaining a twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain, almost certainly the same one as in the aforementioned Tundra/Sequoia, to challenge vehicles like the Bentley Bentayga. The post says it will be “insane”.

The Land Cruiser, on the other hand, will return to its off-road roots. It will reportedly shed its luxury ambitions and revert to a more utilitarian adventure rig. According to Motor1, it will have only two-row seating and a lower price point. This. is great excellent for not only fans of four-wheeling, but those who care about Toyota heritage and the longest running nameplate in the company’s portfolio.

Lexus ES/IS/GS/LS: Both the ES and LS are relatively new and will continue to exist, getting a refresh in 2022. The beloved GS sports-luxury sedan, as previous rumors have suggested, will be killed off. However, the good news is that it’ll get a RWD replacement as a Lexus version of the new Mirai, which actually looks pretty sharp and nothing like the alien sea creature of the current Mirai. We guess it’ll be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, or at least be a plug-in EV. Thankfully, the IS will live on in a redesigned model in 2021.

Lexus NX/RX/GX: Both will ride on the new TNGA-K platform, with the RX designed from the ground up as a true three-row crossover. The GX, another serious off-roader based on the Land Cruiser Prado, will continue to exist with a new model coming in 2023. The timing matches that of the new 4Runner, so perhaps it will be a fancier version of that.

Lexus RC/LC: The current Lexus lineup has some truly great grand tourers still powered by big, naturally aspirated V8s. These, however, will be the last of their kind. The post notes that no models under $90,000 will have a V8. Though it doesn’t specify what will take its place, our sources say it’ll be turbo V6s, aligning with greater industry trends of forced induction and cylinder reduction over large displacement all-motor options.

The LC, however, is not under $90,000, and a massive twin-turbo V8 will power the long-awaited LC F in 2022. This should be a truly stellar machine, giving the Lexus 5.0-liter V8 one last hurrah.

So it looks like Toyota will still have some interesting things in its lineup in the coming years. Hopefully the coronavirus recession won’t throw too big of a wrench into these plans.

  1. Negishi no Keibajo says:

There will not be enough good will left to buy a Toyota product after going through the 2AZ-FE engine disaster. Never.

  2. Lee L says:

    No new yaris 🙁

I understand why, but I’m still sad.

    • Lee L says:

I guess I meant “no current yaris to US” but that might not even be covered in such a timeline.

A hotter version of the corolla hatch will be great, though.

    • Ben Hsu says:

They will likely continue to sell the Mazda-based Yaris as long as they can.

      • Lee L says:

It’s not even a bad car, but compared to the Yaris that the rest of the world gets it’s just depressing. Also, no manual option for the hatch.

  3. Khoua says:

As much as I am “meh” on Toyota’s right now, I am just super glad they’re stepping it up with the turbocharged GR86, a ‘fun’ Toyota Corolla, a ‘sporty’ TRD Camry, then a Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid Truck!? I feel like those cars are what “car enthusiasts” want but can’t really get at the moment because of the current economy :(. But this, this has my hopes up that the market is still strong for cars like this…especially for Toyota to make them.

  4. daruma3gakoronda says:

No love and updates on the sienna?

  5. Lasse J. Nordvik says:

Exciting news! I’ve heard some rumours that the Tacoma and Hilux might be unified into one model to save development costs. What are your thoughts on this?

    • Ben Hsu says:

I don’t think that’ll happen. The Hilux is perfectly suited to the regions it’s sold in, and the Tacoma, while a great truck, is best suited for big Americans.

  6. Bob says:

I’m in the market right now for a low mileage mint GX460 Luxury or perhaps an LX570 if I decide to go that large. Glad I decided to do it this year. Can’t imagine a GX with a V6.

  7. Jim Daniels says:

Glad I finally got the Supercharger and decided to keep my Tundra. With the supercharger and new tune I am also averaging 5.2 mpg increase in fuel economy including smokey burnouts and all.

    • Lee L says:

      Wow, what year tundra?

      • Jim Daniels says:

2010 4×4 Crew Max, ARB lockers front and rear, normally I would be concerned putting a supercharger on a motor with a few miles on it. But I have read the million mile Tundra story and I have pulled a valve cover off. The insides look like brand new so I was willing to give it a try. It is my daily driver, family hauler, my off road rig and my tow vehicle.
