Osaka’s midnight racers have been terrorizing the Kanjo Loop line for decades. There have been many stories about the Kanjozoku, but a new short by Bowls Films is the most in-depth look yet at the Honda Civic driving speed junkies.
Many questions are answered. For example, why the Civic? It all goes back to the one-make races that Honda held at nearby Suzuka Circuit beginning it 1981. Why do they do it? To pass down “real JDM” to the next generation. What’s real JDM? Not what the kids are doing these days.
It’s a fascinating glimpse into a world of highly illegal street racing, one where drivers brazenly taunt the police, drivers run VIN- and license plate-less cars, and wear hockey masks to conceal their identities. Watch the video below, and check out The Kanjozoku for more details.
I saw this on stickydiljoe.com, The Chronicles. If you arent privy to the Honda community. What really has to be said about this is that The Kanjokozoku only exist in Osaka, you are not a Kanjokozoku and you never will be so don’t try. Unless you do it there with them you will not understand the culture and will just be enjoying other peoples lives.
That being said, I find it amazing how different street racing subcultures exist and come out of their environments, you can have the Kanjokozoku, Touge racers, and Wangan racers all in an area of the earth that is roughly equivalent of driving from here to Chicago.
WTF is a kanjokozoku?
Super cool, I <3 Osaka.
Neat video but the idea of “real JDM” by one of the interviewees is amusing since “real JDM” to me are the RWD coupes and sedans of the 70s like the Hakosuka, Fairladies, Bulebirds, Celicas, Corollas, and Mazda RXs that predate all of that Honda FWD stuff…
By real JDM I feel like he is referring to the culture behind the scene rather than what they drive.
Real JDM would be anything from the Japanese Domestic Market, right? Rhd. Also Honda was making wrong wheel drive cars in the seventies.
Real JDM is Honda…all that RWD stuff is nothing but Initial D fanboyism.,
real jdm is allthese vehicle produced from japan for japan. brand doesn’t matter
So they cause havoc on the street and put innocent peoples live on the line? Why are people praisin this?
Nice cars and great production on the video. I like the style of these cars but the way these guys carry on is just stupid. If I saw a bunch of guys in my area driving like this I wouldn’t hessitate to call the cops and sort them out.
So these are the guys that keep me up at night when I’m in Osaka on business. I often look out the window of my Hilton, and hear the raspy farting sound and the blur of headlights as they weave their way around the freeway. I probably did something similarly stupid in my youth, but have outgrown such hooliganism.
