‘Return of Abunai Deka’ trailer promises car chases, gunfights, and the F31 Nissan Leopard

The dangerous detectives are back for a new movie to debut soon in Japan. Toei Studios has revealed a trailer for Return of Abunai Deka, the eight theatrical release in the series, which doesn’t include the original TV series that aired from 1986 to 1987. The movie seems to recapture the tone of the original, which is if Miami Vice took place in Tokyo and was more of a comedy. Best of all, the then-new-but-now-classic F31 Nissan Leopard seems to be making a comeback as well.

The trailer has all the classic hallmarks of an Abunai Deka adventure. Of course there’s Hiroshi Tachi and Kyohei Shibata reprising their roles as Detectives Toshiki Takayama and Yuji Oshita. There’s also slick suits, Tachi shooting a shotgun while riding a motorcycle, and action that seems to take place exclusively at ports.

One big car chase involves a Mercedes S-Class, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Mark X, and your standard Nissan patrol cars. Another appears to have the bad guys in a Dodge Ram Van, though sadly more of a conversion van rather than a dajiban. It’s not clear whether the Leopard — the white Testarossa of Abunai Deka — will see any action but it does do a sick burnout.

It’s been eight years since the last Abunai Deka film, 2016’s Farewell Abunai Deka. That seemed like it was going to be the last chapter in the story, but fans will have to wait until May 24 to see what brings the detectives out of retirement.
