Gonna Boso Like it’s 1985

boso-cressida.jpgAlright, so this isn’t strictly pre-1980 (in fact, I can say here and now with great confidence that 1985 was after 1980), but it’s just too damn hilariously awesome to not mention.

If you’ve ever wondered how to go about converting your Cressida to the Garuchan following, this is a fairly indepth look at the steps involved!  It might be stupid, but hot damn I’ll bet it’s fun.

Check it out.

Ok, now here’s a question that Lachy, Van and I couldn’t work out.

What is the origin of that boso pointed nose? We can work out that the oil cooler thing is inspired by early 70s Japanese touring cars, but where does that nose sheetmetal mod come from?

Can any of you gentle readers shed some light on this vexing issue? 😀

Not sure if this is correct but at the 1971 japanese motorshow Subaru displayed a prototype called the “Isuzu sport wagon” which was styled by Ghia, the back end resembled a Lotus Eclat and the front end had a slight overhang of the headlights (very mild compared to proper boso) but certainly the earliest I’ve seen with that treatment 🙂
    Just a thought.

    A plausible theory 😀

Personally, I would have thought that it might go hand-in-glove with the exposed oil cooler thing. Which is to say, my original thoughts were that there must have been some popular race series in say the late 70s where the racers had extended bodywork, exposed oil coolers and a more pointed nose.

…but if that’s the case I haven’t seen any pics of race cars like that.

I think there’s a certain Camry that deserves this treatment, Van…

Part of me thinks the origin of the “sharknose” comes from the old “sharknose” train locomotives.
