KIDNEY, ANYONE? 38k-mile EF Honda Civic Si

1990 Honda Civic Si 11

For the Honda purist, online searches are a form of self-flagellation. You’ll want to go all Oedipus on your eyeballs after witnessing what crimes the average shocker-rockin’ Civic owner perpetrates on Soichiro’s creations. But wade through enough garish paint jobs and pointless faux vents and you just might find a pristine, unmolested EF Si hatch.Β

Launched in 1987, the EF Civic Si was instrumental in kicking off the whole tuner craze. Honda was firing on all cylinders, and technology from its successful Formula 1 program was trickling down to even its most basic economy cars, putting them light years ahead of the competition with four-wheel double-wishbone suspensions and the renowned VTEC system.

Unfortunately, that raciness within reach also made Hondas positively irresistible to teenagers who would rather paint their wheels magenta and staple a giant slab of carbon fiber onto the trunk than appreciate a car for what it is.

That’s why this 38k-mile 1990 Honda Civic Si in Brewster, New York is such a gem. Aside from an A/C conversion to R134a, it appears to be original. According to the seller, it has no rust and has always been garaged and dry since he took ownership of it in 2011. We don’t know what its life was like before that and the paint does look a bit swirly, but with such low mileage wear is most likely minimal. Mechanically, Hondas of this vintage are near flawless, and at 38,600 miles the engine’s barely broken in.

At the time of this writing the auction has seen 28 bids with a price of $3,575, which is still a steal for a rare specimen that will certainly appreciate in value. A Buy It Now and likely reserve price of $6,500 is less of a bargain, but hopefully keeps the ruinous kiddies away. See the auction on eBay.

$6500? Definitely still a steal for this car. I daily a 1991 Civic Si, also black. My dad bought the one i drive about 7 years ago with 80k on it for $4000. It now has 277k on it and still going strong. Buy this and drive it. End of story.

I bought this a few years ago, and it lives most of its life under a car cover and on a battery tender. Currently milage is 43k.

Glad it found a good home.

Love that it went to someone who loves it. I also have this same model, but in, “Tahitian Green.” I store mine for the winter — to protect it from salt — but from March to October, it’s my daily driver. Yes, I love my ED7, but it’s a driver’s car, and it’s happiest when attacking curvy roads. I wouldn’t want to drive anything else. My winter car (a Camry) is just something I endure out of necessity.

Agreed. My wife actually likes the old boxy civics but there’s not one to be had around here that hasn’t been painted neon colors, lowered and a fart-cannon installed; Riced-out, if you will.

I remember actually wanting to do all that crap to my cars when I was in high school and now I feel ashamed of actually wanting that.

  4. Nigel says:

Change over to some better rubber (V or Z rated), and a drop in air filter.
(That is all this car needs).

    Way nice!

Less than 1,600 miles/year. Wow… Obviously owned by an adult for its entire life, ’cause when I was a teen, I did half that just cruising around one weekend without leaving town.

The “swirliness” is just ’cause it’s a 24-year-old black car. There was some polish and wax that looked like it brought back black paint, but couldn’t tell you the brand right now, even if successfully doing so got a congressman beaten up. I’ll have to look around for it! πŸ™‚

    • Randy says:

Just got in from the Amazon. Based on the reviewers’ pictures, apparently what I was looking for was Meguiars Ultimate Compound and their Ultimate Polish .

So, let the Congressional beatings begin! πŸ™‚

i got rid of my 89 CRX Si years ago and I still miss it till today. Sure, there were nicks nacks and some things wrong with it…but, i still miss it. Can’t explain it! haha

I have had 3 of these cars, and currently own a mint condition, 1991 Si. Never gonna sell it. NEVER. My 1st one got stolen. My second one, I sold because we had kids, and I entered minivan hell. For 12 long years, I was FILLED with regret at losing the second one. Then, a year ago, I found my current one. These things are so rare (good condition ones, anyway) that all I do is cherish it.
