Honda/Acura to Completely Revert to 1991 Lineup

Honda Motor Corp. has shocked the automotive world with the announcement that it will be completely reverting to its 1991 lineup. Safety and emissions equipment will be updated and prices adjusted for inflation, but everything else — including its former ergonomically intuitive cabins, double-wishbone suspensions and even styling — will be brought back unchanged.

This means enthusiast favorites such as the EF Civic, CRX, and third-gen Prelude with four-wheel steering will all be manufactured again for the first time in 22 years. Honda’s luxury brand Acura will also be affected, herlading the return of the long-lost Integra GS-R and mid-engined NSX supercar. Not only will this move result in substantial cost and weight savings to all Honda cars, but it is actually preferable in the eyes of many Honda enthusiasts.

“We’ve realized that everything we’ve made since the S2000 flies in the face of all that Soichiro Honda held dear,” said current president Takanobu Ito, “and we can no longer in good conscience milk his name by selling what is clearly an affront to his legacy.”

“Also,” Ito added, “April Fool’s, suckas! If you want all that go buy a Mazda.”

Never before have I so desperately wished an April Fools joke was true!

Last week I drove a 2013 Honda Civic, a shapeless blob with no rear visibility AT ALL. You have NO IDEA how much I wish this were true!

Kinda like getting that “winning” fake lottery ticket.

I drove my 91 Civic to work this morning. Great little car. Wish it were true.

The majority of my brain (the car side) took over and kept yelling “NSX!! NSX!!!” soooo loud that I couldn’t hear the logical part of my brain saying…. “it’s an April fools joke, Aaron”

First time I’ve ever been fooled by a fake online post/article. Prettty cruel.

Seriously though, while reading through the article, I was preparing to get myself into years of debt for a new 4WS Prelude, or CRX SI. I was just checking up on the site like I do every morning at work, I’d completely forgotten it was April 1st…Not cool, guys.

    Not only that…
GM has stopped making Cadillacs! They have decided to simply place their badge on Acuras since they all look alike. It makes sence; why have multiple companies producing the same chevron-style bodywork?

What I wouldn’t give for an automaker to really do this. Personally for me I’d like Toyota to return to the 1985 lineup… MkII Supra, aw11 mr2, AE86 corolla, Marty McFly edition HiLux, WonderWagon…..oh the difficult choice I’d have to make.

I would go to my Honda dealer tomorrow and order a blue CRX HF with A/C as the only option. Or maybe wait until next year and buy my current car NEW. This April Fools joke is just plain cruel.

Might be the only way to get a replacement for my Civic Wagon before it completely biodegrades around me.

That’s the model I’d have thought of. Whether or not to spring for AWD is the only question.

My advice; snap up a Fit before it gets focus-grouped and dumbed-down.

    That is the cruelest joke.
    Unsubscribing this website now.

Yep, much more desirable than the current line-up of Honda. Modern Honda seem so cheap conceptually by comparison.

God I hate you guys. I got so excited for the gs-r. Oh well. Shoulda known gonna would never regrow its balls. On an up note though, the nsx is scheduled to make s return next year. And we will be seeing a fourth generation Rx7 in a few years. And a new Silvia ids up in the air. Not too mention the GT-86. Not all hope it’s lost for us car enthusiasts. Just need Honda to figure it out now.

This may be a joke, but I’d rather Honda actually did this.

HONDA READ THIS!!!! its ridiculous that they wouldn’t do it. besides the crash ratings you could put in side and front airbags even in a crx with todays technology. these cars all got great gas mileage. COME ON HONDA… WHY NOT… ill take a new 91 civic Si even knowing that 15 years later it will be rusty but still running. I would also prefer a 91 integra over a 94 and up body style.

Totally the year I’d have picked, ’91 being the last year of that product cycle. Given a 2nd chance I’d pick the Accord wagon as I’ve already spent 100k miles behind the wheel of that generation’s Prelude AWS Si. Outside of the 1st gen Insight, Fit and especially the S2000, Honda’s been phoning it in ever since.

  19. Dima said:

Damn. I’ve already belived it =(

Sign me up for a 2014 Acura Legend Coupe (oh, to be able to roll the rear windows down in a coupe again…).

Great April Fools joke! My mind was already thinking of ways on how to persuade my wife to let me finance a brand new 1991 CRX SI. =P

  23. miatadon said:

Great news, but I already have three of those cars, a ’89 Prelude, ’91 Civic Si, and ’92 Integra GSR.

a week later & still not funny. a few years ago I read that Honda was working on going back to their roots… then we got the crz. what I would do for a new…
    91 crx si
    91 civic ex w/ manual
    93 civic si
    93 accord se sedan
    93 integra gsr

This is why I am keeping my stock 2nd gen blue ’88 CRX HF. If only!
