Giga Pudding FAQ

433_Gigapudding1It is a little-known fact that JNC Magazine correspondents are, in fact paid in ramen and Giga Pudding. But outside of the JNC editorial team, there has been very little said about this mysterious dessert, except for what can be learned from its rather irritatingly catchy commercial.

Giga Pudding is made by JDM toymaker TakaraTomy as part of its range of easy-to-make food for children. It’s nothing new, and there are many different brands of instant packet-mix custard pudding available in Japan. But none of them allow you to make a huge pudding this big…and so, somewhere along the way, Giga Pudding seems to have caught the imagination of Japanese adults too, fascinated by the prospect of making a powdered custard dessert larger than your own head.

So let’s take a closer look.  Open the lid on the bucket and inside there’s a quite a treasure-trove of JDM awesomeness.

There’s a large plastic spoon, a huge packet of custard mix, and a smaller sachet for the chocolate topping.

To make it, you add 1.6litres of boiling water to the custard mix, and whisk.  Then you let it cool for a few hours.  Mix the chocolate powder with 170ml of boiling water and let that cool too.  Then pour the custard mixture into the Giga Pudding bucket, and then pour the chocolate mixture into it too, which will settle at the bottom.  Then it goes into the fridge for 10hours, whereupon you tip it upside down and it slides onto the serving dish of your choosing.

The Giga Pudding also comes with some revealing documentation about the species, most notably that there is definitely a male and female Giga Pudding (well, I hope that’s a female…). It also appears that Giga Puddings are prone to random acts of beverage giving, which come from an unusual hiding place.

Remindes me of the 1985 movie “The Stuff” I watched this when I was young and I’m sure this is the reason I can eat pudding or jello that I don’t make myself. lol :-O

Christ on a pogo stick, Kev! Does everything in Japanland have to be anthropomorphic? Those instructions are like Peewee’s Playhouse on crack.

Okay, so I watched the commercial, and it is indeed catchy. But can Giga Pudding only be served communally? I mean, I can’t imagine enjoying my Giga Pudding knowing that the guy next to me is taking another bite with same spoon he used for the first bite. You know, that spoon was just in his mouth, and now he’s sticking it back in the pudding.

There’s a reason we have rules against double dipping. I just isn’t sanitary.

Is Giga pudding’s communal character a required feature of its JDM-awesomeness? This strikes me as a reasonable question, really. Don’t you think?

Kev… you seem to have stopped short of actually making it though. For the sake of all that is JDM, please show us the finished product! I wanna see what this species looks like in it’s mature state. :)

Jeremy, one of the wonderous properties of Giga Pudding is it’s antiseptic properties.

Well the finished product will have to wait until my 5yr old son invites enough of his little friends over to eat it :)

And while double dipping can be avoided by simply scooping out a portion onto individual plates…that would be less JDM and hence by its very nature, unworthy.

I want to know if a grown man can take down an entire Giga Pudding…by himself…in one sitting. And I want to see it chronicled on JNC blog.

Enough of the communal stuff; Giga Pudding in America is a one man snack!

One man Giga Pudding? I am not sure if that amount of gelatinised milk product may be considered a fatal quantity.

Giga puddings eat themselves. That’s kinda scary.

Solo, that amount of custard would fuck you up, JDM or not! Good luck Kev.
