VIDEO: Toyota recreates Tamiya RC Hilux ad

Back in 1981 Japanese radio control vehicle company Tamiya released its RA1028 Toyota Hilux kit. With low gear and 4WD, they were able to string 14 of them together and pull a real Toyota Hilux pickup. To promote the newest Toyota Hilux in the UK, Toyota has recreated that ad, along with a few others, with the RC trucks.

Each Tamiya Hilux generates about 17.1 pound-feet of torque, and the good news is that if you’d like to recreate this ad for yourself, Tamiya re-released the model in 2008. You can watch the other ads in the series below, including one where Hiluxes big and small perform a slalom test while towing a trailer carrying a Toyota 86 (sadly, the Tamiya Hilux is not towing an AE86), another where both get muddy, and one in which the Tamiya proves its underwater driving chops.

I love how the ‘stunt driver’ is wearing a helmet.

    Seriously want a Tamiya Hilux!

Forget the Tacoma….we need the HiLux in the States.

      100% agree

a little side-note. I’ve always wondered why Toyota never really brought any of the diesel trucks/SUVs here to the states?

For a long time Americans have had a generally dim view of diesels, thanks to ones we did get from abroad (thinking of ’70s Mercedes) being noisy and smelly, because it was the ’70s. At the same time, some of our automakers also tried to take advantage of the diesel benefits, to extremely poor results (because almost all the cars we made in the ’70s and ’80s were awful, malaise-era trash even without the added noise and stink of a badly made ’70s-era diesel)

Because of that, they tended not to sell well here (except, of course for larger trucks), and so eventually most automakers, Toyota included, stopped trying.

I fear we’re going to have a similar decades-long diesel drought off the back of the VW emissions scandal

About 2 years ago, I saw a semi-truck hauling a carrier full of white Hilux trucks. I saw them at the 64/81 interchange at Staunton, Va., near my house! I had no idea why they were here, but boy did I want one!

  4. Brio says:

    Hilux are available in Mexico

  5. Dennis Rice says:

They are available in Mexico but the last I checked even they don’t get the diesel. You have to go all they way to Central America for diesel versions.
