One of the most talked about cars from the Tokyo Auto Salon was the Rocky 3000GT, a scratch-built replica of the iconic Toyota 2000GT, but powered by a 3.0-liter 2JZ inline-six. It was the creation of Okazaki-based tuner Rocky Auto, whose mad builds have included a Lexus V8-powered Hakosuka and a different scratch-built 2000GT with a Prius hybrid drivetrain. Here’s a feature documentary on the Rocky 3000GT by a Japanese news station that gives a bit of a peek at how his amazing project was executed.
With the Rocky 3000GT, everything from the frame to the body to the emblems were recreated via CAD. Modern conveniences like power windows, hydraulic rack and pinion steering, and air conditioning were added to make it as easy to use as a Lexus. Note that the steering wheel is removable for bigger drivers and the HVAC controls with the clock.
The video follows legendary Toyota factory drivers from the 2000GT’s 1966 Yatabe Speed Trial as they visit Rocky Auto and give their impressions of his build. It’s all in Japanese, but it’s worth a viewing.

A beautiful work of art here, sorry about my rant a couple of days ago. I have a feeling that at 6′-5″ tall, I would fit in a 2000GT as well as I fit in a Subaru 360, which is not at all.
as a 6’8” tall guy that owns a datsun 120y ….you’ll fit believe me, if you want it no car is too small you might need a different wheel but you can fit
I literally can not fit in a Subaru 360, I just tried, again, about three weeks ago with a sweet, red Young S that I would have paid cash for. I would have to physically relocate the driver’s seat back 4″ until it touches the backseat and that wouldn’t even be a guarantee that I would fit. I’m looking at a nice ’77 B210, that one I can fit in, the Subaru 360 is a different story, unfortunately.

i highly recommend that you do buy it! i bought an hkbsports boss kit too fit a smaller momo wheel and its an absolute joy too have 🙂 especially if you like small japanese cars like me
ps. i just saw the attached picture, i had the same problem in my datsun and a smaller steering wheel fixed it right away

This is a great achievement by Rocky Auto. Clearly they have outdone themselves again. And such a professionally run business by the looks of it too.
My only comment on the car: The stance looks a bit wrong… Maybe it’s the camera angles by the news team, or something is just a bit off somewhere.
How does Toyota allow that? It’s infringement. Will others be recreating other legendary cars from now on? I’m not sure I like it, it’s kinda like Jurassic Park. Leave the legends alone.
Replicas have been happening since the dawn of time. Many bad, but some good. And, it being a replica means they did not ruin a real one.
When they use 3D scanning to recreate the car, that’s more than a mere replica.
The proportions are wrong the front section is much larger than original to fit the boat anchor. For that price a billet straight six was a must. I guess Japanese with money can only copy classics they can never do something that actually looks good.
