Toyota AE86 goes drifting with 86 and GR86 in Japanese commercial

Toyota commercials have been getting better, and the latest Japanese-market ad continues the trend. To market the new GR86, they bring out the previous-generation 86 and the one that started it all, the original AE86 Sprinter Trueno. The trio do what they do best, or at least are most famous for, and tandem drift around a tight track. However, the most impressive thing about the ad isn’t the driving, but the camerawork.

The camera follows the cars closely as they slide, moving around, over, and through them. There’s almost no narration, with just two letters, “G” and “R” spoken at thend of the spot. Otherwise, it’s just 30 seconds of tire-smoking fun and amazing camera movements. Fortunately, Toyota released a behind-the-scenes video to show how the ad was made.

Filmed on a Fuji Speedway short track, producers used a drone to fly around the drifting cars. The behind-the-scenes video shows how the three drivers and drone pilot moved in unison to capture the footage. And yes, the drone actually flies into the open window of a drifting car.

The ad follows on the heels of other good Toyota commercials in recent months. It’s one of the more exciting car commercials we’ve seen in a while, and it’s hard to believe it came from the same company that gave us brothers who dreamed of racing Monaco in identical Camrys.

    Absolutely brilliantly produced…

I knew the Toyota guys could still speak “86”…

  3. Jim Daniels says:

Excellent work by the production crew. I knew Toyota still had IT, although they have been on a different focus for many years. It is good to see Toyota bringing back some excitement to their line up with the GR 86, GR Supra and the TRD PRO Tundra.
