This Honda Civic EF wearing Advan Oni 2 wheels was our SEMA favorite

We’re still compiling the hundreds of photos from SEMA into a digestible gallery (and intermittently washing our eyes out with bleach), but we wanted to give credit where credit was due. Our favorite car at the 2022 SEMA Show was a humble 30-year-old Honda Civic hatchback at the Yokohama Advan booth. Even better, it was brought in to advertise the remake of Advan’s famed Oni wheels.

There’s massive pressure to make the most eye-catching car in order to stand out at SEMA, but stock body lines are just timeless. Plus, when everyone’s rolling out in neon colors a simple white actually stands out from the crowd. The red stripe on what would be the JDM SiR trim isn’t stock but subtly evokes Honda’s racing colors.

The wheels are a modern interpretation of the classic Advan Oni. It was one of many 3-spoke designs, but Advan is probably the most famous purveyor of them all with this and other designs. It was a staple of Japan’s tuner heyday and could be found on everything from hashiriya to drift machines.

The original was a 3-piece available in many contemporary sizes and lug patterns, including 5×114.3. The Oni 2 smooths out the design with a 1-piece construction and is only available in a 4×100 bolt layout and a 15-inch diameter. In Japan it’s marketed to kei car owners, but it ends up looking right at home on a Bubble Era Civic.

There are still many touches that honor the original Oni. It retains the square nut hole design and the engraved model name on the spoke. It’s available in widths ranging from 5J to 8J in a variety of front-drive offsets. Wheels 6.5J and wider have a deep lip design.

Oni means “demon” in Japanese but the car is pure elegance. The ageless minimalism of the EF Civic pairs perfectly with the wheels. And in a sea of wide-bodied, candy-colored atrocities, it was a breath of fresh air.

Man, looking for decent 14 inch TIRES to add to my car. Not much available, did Yokohama reintroduce the 008 in say, a 205/60/14 or thereabouts?

I am glad they are remaking the wheel. It keeps options available. The original 3 piece is beautiful the remake did not translate as well.

Was there any investigating into the two large air intakes on the lower front right and left? Where do they go? What are they feeding?
