Sex in the Subaru

Most of us would agree that the ’73 Subaru DL (aka Leone, in other markets) is a sexy beast, particularly with the early, small chrome bumpers, but the accompanying sultry advertising pitch might leave you gasping with it’s blatantly sexist metaphors:

Okay, if you’re not outraged, you’re probably chuckling, but let’s not be judgmental of an advertisement made up during the hairy chested, Marlboro Man decade.

At the same time, you gotta wonder if more women than men were buying Subarus back then. Hmm, maybe there’s a companion ad that seduces female car buyers to tame their own hairy-chested Subaru?

this reminds me of those 70s airline commercials hahaha. being a 22 year old kid in 2009 this is almost impossible to comprehend. i’d take a 73 subaru without the cheesy ads any day!

    LOL, great find, Matt!

Reminds me of this old Goodyear ad. “When a woman’s at the wheel, Polyglas means more than mileage.”

Or this Buick ad. “A… machine that a woman can admire and enjoy to the fullest, but only a man can really understand.”

    Also, giggity.

  3. Gen Kanai says:

“1400c quadrozontal engine”? That’s some crazy marketing for ‘four cylinder boxer’.

  4. Pickle says:

    I now officially love Subaru…..hahaha

Thanks for yet again giving ma a very nice conclusion to my day JNC!

    Maybe that’s why I drive Toyota: I don’t have a hairy chest!!

@Gen Kanai: Exactly my thoughts! 😉
But apparently it does mean something since Google has 428 results on Quadrazontal. First hit appears to be correct, it features an image of the Subaru EA71 engine:

  6. Kev says:

I’m pretty certain that surveys have showed that 97 out of a 100 women are not attracted to men who use the term “quadrozontal” in everyday conversation.

So…if you had a straight six, then instead of “quadrozontal” you would have a “sextical engine”? No wonder chicks dig the Hako.

  7. retrokid says:

I wonder if anyone actually got turned on by that ad and actually drove their Soobie naked… hmmm….

So where do I sign up to buy that “Sextical Engine?”

  8. Ben says:

Also, it’s funny how they were marketing front wheel drive as the next big thing in those days. Of course, now we know better but it’s too late to turn back 🙁
