QotW: Where do you like to drive your JNC?

Today is day on which the national holiday Mountain Day in observed in Japan. Technically the holiday falls on August 11 because the kanji for “8” (八) resembles a mountain, and “11” resembles two trees, but everyone gets the day off on Monday the 12th. There is no agreed upon way to celebrate Mountain Day, but with 73 percent of Japan’s land being mountainous, we can probably all agree that taking your JNC to a touge road is a fine a way as any.

Where do you like to drive your JNC?

The most entertaining comment by next Monday will receive a prize. Scroll down to see the winner of last week’s QotW, “What’s your dealbreaker when buying a used JNC?

Three of the most popular answers from last week’s question were rust, missing paperwork, and a shady seller. The winner, Martin, makes a case for why that last one tops the others:

My deal breaker isn’t any one single thing. Depending on the car, and how high on my dream list it is, I would be willing to jump through some hoops. Rust can be repaired, Parts can be found or made, paperwork can be sorted out(I’ve had had to do lien holds on a few) and elbow grease can be applied. What really makes me walk away is when there is a combo of these items and the seller is really pushy or just seems like they are hiding something.

We all know the type. They talk up the good points and gloss over or straight up lie about the bad ones. Saying its never been in an accident when there are clearly signs of rear end damage in the spare tire well or body panels that are massively mis-aligned. Paper work that is water damaged and not in their name but they say ‘its good, thats my cousin’.

Omedetou! Your comment has earned you a set of decals from the JNC Shop.

I love to drive my 1989 Starion/Conquest on freeways, open roads, and any place with lots of turns. No radio on, just the hum of the 2.6 liter engine is all the music I need. Sometimes, locally, I pass by the apartment complex I used to live when I first got the car new. I stop at the red light and think about how my life changed from when I first got the car in 1989, 30 years ago…Married, a baby (now 20 years old), and the owner of a 2006 Evo IX-MR. The old, and the new(er), just like my life! Lol.

No JNC right now, but that is an awesome photo!!

My JNC and I like to take spirited sunrise walks and drives through paved hard obstacles laid out with pylons while sipping on Gatorade. She dances with cones ever so elegantly while I sit behind the wheel navigating and just bracing for dear life. She begs for that extra throttle push to the rev limit as we switch between first and second gear. That’s right, my ’86 MR2 and I go autocrossing and it is glorious!

Santa Cruz Mountains, up and over to the ocean and back on a different road – favorite of SF Bay Area, Silicon Valley.

I like to drive my JNC (RX7 FD) like it was mwant to be driven, throught curves, hill ups ans downs and listening to an eclectic mix of japanese music and Elvis. I imagine myself on an old Cosmo with MAT-1 livery, so I could go chasing some kaijus thinking I’m Ultraman, keeping the revs high up, changing gears as if they were choreographed movements to make the monster explode. We have to be careful the red light does not start to blink, otherwise you have to go home early, without defeating the monster the right way. That means trouble for later.

Once it is all fonesh, hopefully in a good way and without red lights blinking, you get out, after the struggle at the tail of the monstrous ride, where you left your soul in the asphalt in the form of burnt rubber, and you are back to the garage, and on your human host form, a temporarily disguise until the next kaiju appears.

It’s not over, next weekend, if it does not rain, we will be back with another episode…

    Graveyards.

Somberly as it might sound, I use my Celica for grave runs for the most part. I visit a set group of graves of my relatives and put flowers once a month. The path I take usually goes past areas with high concentrations of tourists, so in a way, the Celica acts as a “ghost” of times gone by. Plus the looks and compliments from folks on seeing this grey car plying the roads still as a throwback to times gone by is small comfort for such a somber run.

I love driving my JNC home. It could be from a mountain road, race track, grocery store or gas station but as long as it makes it home with its own power into the garage, I’m a happy camper.

    Wait.

    Everyone’s JNC’s drive?

I’m doing this whole thing wrong.

Roads leading to the Blue Ridge parkway. Tail of the dragon soon.

    • Speedie says:

Great choices. I did the Tail in my 2010 RX-8 and it was a hoot. Not sure I would enjoy it as much in my old 76 Celica GT but would love the chance.
