QotW: What’s the best shade of JNC red?

dog-vintage-s600-coupe-wp3

I hate red. It’s too loud, it fades to a powdery pink over time, and it’s often too obvious a choice. In Japan, red was forbidden on passenger cars until Soichiro Honda embarrassed MITI with a scathing editorial in the newspapers, thus opening the doors for the color on his S-Series and all other Japanese cars.

What’s the best shade of JNC red?

What say you, dear reader? As always, the most entertaining comment by next Monday will receive a prize. Scroll down to see the winner of last week’s QotW, “What JNC would you get if you had a time machine?

1087_Toyota 2000GT

The winner this week was Sleepin, despite his greediness for not one but two Toyota 2000GTs and his somewhat disturbing use of the word “again”:

I wholeheartedly agree with the 2000GT comments above. The design and styling narrowly beats out Ferraris of the era, and comes second only to the Miura.
I would have to buy two. One to drive and enjoy, the other to preserve with sub-hundred miles on the odometer for an easy sale to purchase all the others on my bucket list (and a Lexus hoverboard, a sports almanac and all while avoiding making out with my mom again…because that is what people with time machines do).

Omedetou, your comment has earned you a set of decals from the JNC Shop!

It may not be entirely red, but the best red I’ve seen so far is the panda red (and black) Levin/Trueno AE86 shade. 80s two tone to the max and an underdog shade on the AE86 as most people favor the panda white/black over the red/black

    Grande. Prix. <a href="https://gx61.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/267443-1655484-1-6575218-pc.jpg"Red.

Offered only as one of the three paint codes available on the aero homologation Fairlady ZG, its exclusivity and provenance command a deeper look into your own blood-tinged reflection in it’s fender. Burgundy? Maroon? Oxblood, Merlot, Cordovan… Try as you might, you simply can’t hang a label on this hue. It is what it is, Grande Prix Red. It contrasts the gray bumper and ur-Z flares that inspired so many reproductions after it beautifully. It sets off the chrome brightwork outlining the distinct Z window shape perfectly.

Drool as much as you want, but please – not on the paint!

R64 Seychelles Red found on a very small number of Dodge Conquests. It is a darker hue not liken to fade as bad but Mitsu’s famous peeling clearcoat does apply. The biggest reason this is my choice, the person in charge of noun names at Mitsubishi was either a very disturbed individual with a peculiar sense of humor (Pajero for example, spanish slang for male extremities) or threw a dart at a cork board covered in randomly jotted down sticky notes.

Most people do not remember that in the 1960s Japanese vehicle colors were regulated. Red was for fire protection vehicles only. Pure white was for Police vehicles. Olive drab was restricted to military vehicles.

    • Yoda says:

I wonder if that meant that the paints were the same formula between manufacturers (set down by the Japanese fire service and probably made by the same supplier) so that bright red export Datsuns and Toyotas would’ve both been exactly the same color.

I like, no I adore the red on my N13 Nissan Sunny. It is the brightest red I’ve ever seen. It is technically impossible to produce a brighter shade of red, in my humble opinion. During a car show, a Ferrari Testarossa (!) parked next to my Sunny. My humble little red Nissan once and for all showed who’s the daddy of the red cars. It made the Ferrari look bland. The best shade of JNC red, in my opinion, is on a 1971 Toyota Corolla wagon. Of course, I could be biased since that was my first car.

  7. ahja says:

For me, red is only rarely a preferred oem color on a car. And almost never is it my favorite. The mk4 Supra is a great example. Great dark but bright red, no hint of tomato orangey to it. But its still not the best oem color on the car. It doesn’t qualify for JNC status anyway.

The DR30 red seems to be a similar deep/dark tone. Plus it came paired with a black 2-tone scheme. Plus the Hasemi racecar. Can’t get much better than that, so to me that’s the best classic Japanese red.

…But silver/black looks better on the production street cars.

No favorite red shades of my own, but as far as keeping the old-style, single-stage red looking not-pink – or worse, ya just gotta stay after it with good polish and wax. I saw a Benz SL that was almost white, restored to RED without a repaint. It CAN be done.

  9. ya_boy_yeti says:

not a big fan of red. However if i had to choose it would be “Cherry Red Pearl” from Nissan. due to how bright it is. plus it looks sexy on an r32.

  10. Seiko The Neko says:

I would have to root for the appropriately named “Classic Red” on the original NA MX-5. It’s just become such an iconic combination. Even some non-car people would recognize a Miata in that color very easily, not to mention those giant round headlights.

  11. Madis says:

it must be the ugly SQ blaze red on the fc3s rx-7, just because i have that

  12. james says:

I’ve 2 nominations: Passion Red Mica and Bordeaux Red Pearl
